What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

When signing up, put down BadlyDrawnBoy in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

3. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

4. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

5. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

Remember, new players: add this week's "Bottom Feeder" (BadlyDrawnBoy) as your referral when signing up!

The Reviews

Here's what the critic's think of this week's wide releases, using Rotten Tomatoes as a guide:

Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement = 29% Rotten

Alien vs. Predator = 9% Rotten

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie = 0% Rotten ( )

Of course, all three of these movies are pretty much "review proof," so I doubt this will affect box office.

I'm thinking that with Princess Diaries 2 as a kid-safe alternative, parents will be saying Yu-Gi-No to Yu-Gi-Oh.

What's the word on Open Water (OPENW)? It's ~ $42 or $45 or so, and I just read a glowing review of it (I picked up ~ 18,000 shares).

I'm now fairly heavily invested (more than 4 hundred thousand or so) in three movies, Ice Age 2, Open Water, and a short on Shrek 4 (shorted ~ H$500,000 worth at at ~ $75/share.)

By the way, there's been a jump in Cheech and Chong get Blunted (or whatever it's called), I had 50,000 shares of it (I like Cheech and Chong movies).

I propose that we kick gcribbs out of the league. He is nothing but a nuisance.

I think that's his strategy.

"I'm going long with this....."

And like sheep people take the bait while he secretly sells it off.

I think GCribbs would kill himself if he were a real stock daytrader. He's up and down more a 70 story elevator. :P

Out of curiosity, can you tell when everybody's last trade was? Just wondering how many people are active, and who was active for a while but stopped trading a month or two ago.

And I'm pretty much out of SHRK4 now (maybe 1,000 or 2,000 shares left), heavily invested in both Open Water and Ice Age 2.

By the way, after hearing the theater reports for this one, I changed my mind and decided to go long on YUGIO. We'll see what happens.

I agree with you JasonF. YUGIO looks like it might be worth a long.

I simply could not stay long on AVSP. I cost myself a few hundred thousand by selling it this morning. I am almost happy I did based on how bad the movie seems to be.

I am still up $900k so I can live with myself

I am now setting a new goal for this weekend of $32 million by sunday night. This might be tough since I have to go to my sister's wedding Saturday.

Another good day

I made a few reset trades that got me a few more bucks and gave me another $1 million gain day.

I hope my last minute long on YUGIO turns out ok.

Looks like AVSP is going to reward those with nerves. I passed on it unfortunately. I should make a bit on my YUGIO long though.

I do think AVSP will drop Saturday and Sunday, like VILLG did.

I made two right guesses and went 50k in shares on both so I can live with that.

I passed on AVSP and will have to live with making money on the slide down afterward

To be perfectly honest, despite what you guys told me to, I ducked out of Princess Diaries 2 right before the halt.

I went 2/2 though @ 50k though, so I'm set for at least around 2 million or so.

I stuck to my guns with AVSP. Looks like my million lost last week will be returned. with 50k in it looks like it's going to pay out. oh, the end of an era. The first buy in my port jump off and on it for the longest time.

I also picked up 50k of princess 2.

Worse call of the weekend was the put on yug.
