I thought the Yoda fight was pretty cool. Not something that would strike me as being funny.

Debaser 08-03-04 06:23 PM

'Funny how? Clown be me funny to you? MMMM?

Yoda in 'YodaFellas'

Fok 08-03-04 06:30 PM

We all knew that Yoda was a great powerful Jedi. By seeing him fight, kinda ruins it.
One question I have, in ESB when Yoda is lifting the X-wing out of the swamp, he looks relaxed (or stoned). But in AOTC, when he's preventing that tube (or whatever it is) from crushing OB1 and Anakin, he's looks like he's taking a s**t. Why would one be more difficult than the other when "size matters not".

Regardless though, there shouldn't have been that much difference in his expressions.

Indulging you for a bit here. I'm guessing totally different circumstances? In Empire, he hasn't used the Force for what, about 20 odd years? In Clones he was still in the middle of the fight so maybe he was more tired?

mookyman 08-03-04 06:55 PM

I thought it was both funny AND excellent. It's like seeing Gimli kick ass - it's always great to root for the little guy.

costanza 08-03-04 07:09 PM

since they're putting cg yoda into esb, maybe they'll make him look like he's taking a shit now, for continuity's sake.

:hscratch: Where'd you hear that? The only CGI-ing of Yoda I've heard of is in Episode 1. Not Empire.

Debaser 08-03-04 07:21 PM

For once a Star Wars thread without any negative comments.

Now there's shit talking about Yoda. :)

I may just have been me, but I noticed something while watching Anakin fight Dooku with 2 sabers. After he loses the 2nd saber he goes over by the ship and cuts the power line. After that we get cool red and blue flashes, but you hardly see the sabers contact or hear the contact noise. And the steps seem just a bit too choreographed to me as well. I thought that perhaps Anakin at this point is already in league with the Sith, and his Duel with Dooku is staged... then he gets his arm cut off. Maybe Dooku just got mad at Anakin for not letting him off Obi-Wan and took the plan one step further.
Actually, I believe that's a phenomenon known as "bad directing."

He's not real??

Seeing Yoda in a saber duel was silly at first and then turned into utter crap.

You would think that if he hadn't used the force in 20 years that it would be harder for him to "remember" how to lift/hold something in the air. Thus he should look like he was taking a shit after a long bout with constipation, in ESB. :) Btw, Fok, I don't think there is a better way to describe his facial expression in that scene in AOTC.

Rivero 08-04-04 09:32 AM

I wonder if the bathroom in the Jedi Temple has a golden mini-toilet specifically for the old wise one.

Debaser 08-04-04 10:16 AM

They don't call them 'Floaters' for nothing.

Again, indulging you here. That's under the assumption that that's how one uses the Force. Maybe it's something you don't HAVE to remember. He *is* the freakin' Jedi Master after all. So I'm sticking to the fatigue factor in Clones.

I forgot which magazine Ive read that ILM originally had Yoda fighting Dooku really slow, George Lucase told him he wanted Yoda to fight faster. The ILM guys gave him the "have you gone crazy George" look.

And George still wanted it faster till you see it as the product it is today!

jaeufraser 08-04-04 03:32 PM

Personally I think most of you guys are crazy. If anything the Yoda fight was the highlight of these movies for most people, and I for one thought it was awesome. I mean, again, I suppose for some Yoda fighting period is silly, but in movies with walking talking carpets and a giant slug as a bad guy, I'm not sure why a little green guy hopping around is so off.

With regards to why he looked serious. Well, in ESB it was a calm moment, he was focused on one thing. In AOTC he was in a fight, these things were thrown at him randomly and he had to use the force fairly quickly. Just a different situation beings out different responses. I don't think people's lives were on the line in ESB when he was using the force.

Have any films in the history of cinema been overanalyzed as much as the 5 star wars films?

We are at the point now where we are analyzing whether or not a muppet needs to relieve himself?

Why compare computer animations to muppets?

At what point does it all become silly?

The Yoda fight was a highlight of the movie for me. I remember the theater erupted when he bounded into action. When he picked up his cane and limped away, everyone laughed.

I always knew Yoda would be able to kick some ass in a fight, I mean if he were being attacked he wouldn't just sit there and take it. But I also envisioned him to be so powerful that he wouldn't have to resort to using a lightsabre and flipping around like Sonic the Hedgehog trying to kill Dr. Robotnik at the end of a level. If yoda had the power to lift ten-ton starships and harness the power of lightning, he should have been able to stop Dooku from coming anywhere near him. I kinda felt the same way about the "Wizard Duel" in Fellowship of the Ring. These two characters, Gandalf and Saruman, were literally Gods who were there at the creation of the earth who during the time of LOTR decided to take the physical forms of old men. To see them fight like two old fogies wrestling-style was kind of.....disappointing.

Something that's always nitpicked at me, but no one else has ever mentioned, is why Jedis use one hand to open their cloaks, then use the force to levitate (or whatever) their lightsabers into their other hand? Why not use the force to hold open their cloak, too?

In fact, why use the force at all? Why not use a hand for each task? Seems like a petty use of the force to just put something in one's hand that one could just as easily grasp. Open cloak, grab lightsaber. How hard can that be? Are Jedis just lazy demigods?

As far as I know, only Yoda did this. Everyone else grabbed their lightsaber from their belt clip thing. They only used the Force to "pull" it to them when it wasn't within their grasp.

Read answer above, but to answer the first question, because it's cool to see you move objects without using your hands. Always have been, always will be.

I still think by showing Yoda fight, it limits how great and powerful he really is.
