Please help to identify this movie

This was from the late '80s that I saw on cable and was a romantic comedy with a nerdy kid who looked like Patrick Dempsey. His girlfriend was going on a trip to the Carribean but he couldn't go because he had to stay and go to Summer School since he failed a class. He ends up getting out of Summer School by aceing his final or something and when he goes after his girlfriend but was never able to catch up with her. He ends up on a wacky adventure and goes to jail in Mexico without a trial and is sentanced to 6 years. He eventually gets out and ends up finding his girlfriend near the end. Any idea what movie this was?

According to the plot description from imdb:
Young Danny is following his rich girlfriend's family to the Caribbean. But suddenly he simply must make a chemistry test and cannot go with them. After they have left, he gets a leave from his professor and takes a plane to find them. But he is not quite sure where they are, and meets smugglers, crazy captains and murderers.

John Cusack plays Danny, btw.

What guys? It was just me. ;) I'm convinced that any movie made in the 80's with John Cusack in it is worth owning. You've convinced me to pick up this title.
