Best opening credits of all time

I know this has been done before, some while ago.

But I figured, people have seen many new movies since, including the many movies that come out.

Best opening credits of all time:
Seven
Dawn of the Dead

Noteable mentions:
Goldeneye
End of Days
Eraser
Fight Club

Debaser 07-23-04 07:52 AM

Star Wars

Terminator 2
Dumb and Dumber

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

It would have to be the Bond Films, less the last 4.

Giles 07-23-04 08:32 AM

Superman... what a great way to start, a fantastic overture complete with whooshing credits.

aren't the opening credits for Fahrenheit 451 spoken and there's no text on the screen?? that's pretty cool...

sundog 07-23-04 08:57 AM

You can't go wrong with Saul Bass and all the fine credits he did for Hitchcock, my favorites being Vertigo and Psycho.

And Superman is up there, done by University of Illinois alum Richard Greenburg. When I was at school down there they had an exhibit of his work, all of it was pretty inventive, particularly the stuff he did All That Jazz.

And I can't remember the designer's name, but the credits for Dr. Strangelove are great.

For slow and deliberate the patient reveal of the cast and crew in Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West are noteworthy.

Of recent note, I loved the opening titles in Bertolucci's The Dreamers.

To get even odder, Apichatpong Weerasethekul's Blissfully Yours:
Spoiler:
has the titles and credits in the middle of the film.

Godard did this for Contempt. Though, unless you can understand French it defeats the purpose because the English subtitles act as onscreen credits.

Mr. Salty 07-23-04 09:11 AM

To Kill a Mockingbird

Dabaomb 07-23-04 09:16 AM

I liked the comic book intro to Spider Man 2.

Get Me Coffee 07-23-04 09:21 AM

Spider-Man 2 was pretty cool

Zien 07-23-04 10:08 AM

Almost Famous, with the shots of Crowe's collection of band stuff and the hand writing the cast's name. And he misspells France/is McDorman.

neale 07-23-04 10:25 AM

I always liked the simplicy and coolness of "Panic Room."

Groucho 07-23-04 10:29 AM

I'll second Almost Famous.

Kal-El 07-23-04 11:00 AM

Superman and Star Wars. Nothing better than "flying credits" coupled with John Williams' music to get one in the mood for the movie.

MasterCXtreme 07-23-04 11:07 AM

Austin Powers - 1 & 2 had really funny opening credits.
Big Lebowski - The bowling alley with Dylan playing over in slow motion is excellent
Men In Black - Pretty cool with the bug flying through the air.
O Brother Where Art Thou? - I love the style with "Big Rock Candy Mountain" playing over.
Signs - Pretty creepy way to open a movie.

Almost Famous, MP & THG, Fight Club, and Spiderman 2 I also agree with.

...Reservoir Dogs is sweet too.

Derrich 07-23-04 11:20 AM

I enjoyed the credits for both Superman I and II.

Also loved the credits for Signs, Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom, Spy Hard (the ONLY funny thing in the movie!), The Naked Gun, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Terminator 2, and Lethal Weapon 3.
