Akira Question

I just watched Akira again but was wondering is there an actual shot in the movie where Kaneda is walking towards the bike, like in the poster?

As seen here:

Yeah, like that picture of Akira (or is it Tetsuo) sitting on the throne.

The composition is kind of similar to the shot late in the film when Kaneda approaches his bike to go and confront Tetsuo...however, in the film the bike is covered by a protective cloth he removes.

I know the movie almost shot-for-shot because I think it's a masterpiece of animation art and have seen it a stupid number of times.

I have a T-shirt with that poster on it, which is about as openly geeky as I get.

I think it would be Akira in the manga, and Tetsuo in the anime.

15 years after first seeing the film, my friend and I still break out the "Tetsuooooo" "Kanedaaaaa" lines once in a while.

Isn't it CANADAAAAAAAAAAAA! in the new dub of the film? It sounds so lame now I can barely stand the movie anymore.

No, not exactly. There's a long A sound in the middle of Kaneda's name. Kuhnayda sounds better than KahnAda, I agree.

Hmmm, haven't listened to the new dub lately, but Kaneda should be pronouced "Kah-neh-da". If it was pronounced "Kah-nay-da", the spelling of his name should be Kaneida. Ah, maybe I'm being too picky and anal about it.

Show off....

But it still doesn't bother me as much as when I hear "Karry-okee".

When I hear someone say "karry-okee", I almost want to commit "harry-karry"

Yes, the new dub pronounces Kaneda correctly, whereas the old dub made up its own way of saying it. Of course, I always watch this one with the Japanese 5.1 DTS soundtrack [which makes it one of my favorite DVDs in my collection].

Doesn't really matter if in the new dub, they pronounce it correctly (as they do in the Japanese version), after all a ub is a localization (the field I work in actually) of the movie-and in cases like these, where the characters name 1- is not consistent with previous incarnations of the character and 2-conflicts with another local term (the country CANADA)- the localization is done poorly. It doesn't sit right with me.

It's like localizing the Passion of the Christ for Spain and still referring to JESUS as <JESUS> and not <hesus>.

Have you ever heard how the Japanese pronounce English words? Every native speaker of a language adapts pronunciations of other languages according to the phonemes of his own language. America is the only nation in the world where people get anal about pronouncing things like the original language, and even then, mostly, it's an approximation (that is, it's how we imagine it's spoken in the original language-It's usually quite different).

Anyone read the books? I picked up the Dark Horse re-release a few years back and it's truly brilliant. So much better than the movie- one of the best SF novelizations of the past 20yrs. The translation is excellent.

Yes, it's better than Watchman.

Sorry about the delay responding. No, that's not what I'm saying. The French pronounce words like they would be pronounced in French, like Picnic is pronounced Peek Neek (Pique-nique, if you will). I'm not saying the Japanese insist we pronounce Japanese like they do. It's Americans that get anal when someone doesn't pronounce Japanese like they imagine the Japanese pronounce it.

I love how England uses FILL-et instead of our faux French fil-LAY.
