The Top 100 Overlooked Films of the 1990s
Lists are a dime a dozen but this one might be of some interest. The Online Film Critics Society has put together "The Top 100 Overlooked Films of the 1990s" but what's cool is that different critics wrote mini-essays on each film. (I'm a member and I have a few in there)
Anyway, here's the link: http://ofcs.rottentomatoes.com/pages/pr/1990overlooked |
Some quality flicks there, thanks for the post.
|
Pretty good list there. Some of those definitely were criminally overlooked.
|
Based on much of the other fare, I'm surprised that The Frighteners isn't listed.
Other than that, I'm not sure if I should feel indicated for owning and enjoying a majority of these titles or be embarassed. |
You should definitely feel indicated. ;)
|
Very Bad Things = sux0rz, but good list.
|
Glad to see Richard III and The Ice Storm on there, but why no love for Cold-Blooded?
|
thanks for the list. My 1.99/movie rental from BlockBuster expired a couple of days ago..Maybe I could of rented a few of these movies!
I will check the titles out, though |
Waiting for Guffman? All I hear about that is praise. I missed that boat I guess. Probaly 2 of the worst hours of my life, ever.
|
Very Bad Things shouldn't be on the list...But I agree with it for the most part.
|
Hoo-ray for Babe: Pig in the City. Siskel (R.i.P.) was right about this movie being best of '98.
|
I'd put Alexander Payne's Citizen Ruth and/or Election somewhere on that list if I was making it. But other than that, there's some of my favorites (let's hear it for Safe!) and some that I've always meant to see, but never got around to- plus some that I may have to look into now. Not bad.

Nice to see Babe: A Pig in the City on the top ten.
Ghost Dog doesn't belong on that list. It wouldn't get half the praise it gets if Jarmusch didn't direct. |
Some of those don't belong there... either because they weren't really overlooked or because they just weren't that good. An interesting list nonetheless.
|
Mystery Men is listed and The Thin Red Line isn't.
Riiiiiiight. |

Originally posted by Brain Stew The Thin Red Line sucked. It was overhyped anyhow. |
BEAUTIFUL GIRLS deserved to be higher up on that list.
 MILLER'S CROSSING @ number one. |

Great list, except for
Mystery Men and Joe vs. The Volcano I would have added War of the Buttons and Night on Earth instead. |
Finally - a list that includes some of my absolute favorites, including:
Ravenous Matinee One False Move A Perfect World Lone Star Dead Calm Dellamorter Dellamore (Cemetary Man) Pump Up The Volume Living In Oblivion....... etc. Actually, if that list of 100 were the only titles released during the 90's, it would have been a great decade for movies! |
Well, I'm very disappointed with the list. Most of these films are quite well-known and well-regarded. A few of them were pretty big hits. Apparently, there were only about eight or nine foreign movies overlooked in the 90's. If this was the best list that a ton of film experts could concoct, well - that saddens me. Give anyone here at DVDTalk two days and an IMDb connection, and I'm sure they could come up with a list just as good and/or better. that's not an insult to the critics who compiled this list, I'm sure they're alright people - but a lot of the choices, and more importantly, the ignored, much more suited candidates, seem just plain odd.
Originally posted by Rivero No, no. The Thin Red Line is a beautiful, misunderstood and haunting movie. I almost agree with Martin Scorsese when he named it the best film of the 90's. |
The reason the list skews towards films that are pretty well known (by real film fans) is because of the voting process. There are over 100 members in the OFCS and many, many less-well known films were nominated. But if not enough people have seen them they won't get the votes to make the list. It always happens that way. There was some discussion of how to handle that aspect of it but I think a straight vote ended up being the most democratic way.
