What other movie sites do you go to? And why the hate with AICN?

Anyone of you regularly check other sites that feature film reviews and upcoming projects?

Aside fm Aint-It-Cool-News, I also go to Dark Horizons & JoBlo. I also check sites dedicated to Asian films like Hong Kong Cinema (View fm Brooklyn Bridge), LoveHKfilm, Midnight Eye &Foutz.net.

I notice that a lot of people seem to really despise Harry Knowles of AICN. I honestly think that some of the hate derives from the fact that:

- he now has considerable influence in Hollywood
- he doesn't need to exercise and is way, way too fat but still
gets to do what he loves
- he has a very successful website
- he watches movies way before most of us do
- he is overweight but some Hollywood people still kiss his big
fat ass

I think you forgot:
- he totally buys into hype (Star Wars Episode II better than Empire Strikes Back )
- half of his reviews sound like incoherent fanboy ravings, and the other half are about how he likes to collect pantyhose commercials or something like that

But hey, that's just my opinion.

In response to the first question though, I go to UpcomingMovies (now movies.yahoo.com/upcoming) for most of the information I need. I don't really get excited about looking at movie stills and cast lists and reading about little plot details months in advance. For Asian movies, I usally go to KungFuCinema or KFC Cinema and sometimes NixFlix. For DVDs, I use DVD-Basen or occasionally IGN DVD.

I agree 100% Michael, the amount of stupid news that is formated like that is annoying. Not to mention the feedback is full of morons.

- he now has considerable influence in Hollywood
BAW HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA... no wait.. you were serious? BAW HA HA AH AHA HAH AHA AHA HAHAH AHA HA

- he doesn't need to exercise and is way, way too fat but still
gets to do what he loves
He sure must not like sex then.

- he has a very successful website
If you mean a watering hole for 12 year olds and people who don't know better places for news then sure.. why not. Just go to the Hollywoodreporter.com and enjoy REAL industry news.

- he watches movies way before most of us do
Have I mentioned lately that I watched harold and kumar go to white castle already? People can watch movies in advance. hell I saw spiderman 2 twice before release date.

- he is overweight but some Hollywood people still kiss his big fat ass
Who? He may have friends in the industry but he's the only one kissing ass when it comes to it. Take a look at the hellboy coverage. I don't think his lips could get any browner.

AICN is the shit hole of the industry. Worthless on all accounts.

That's two reasons why AICN is considered a joke. The third reason is he'll print anything anyone sends him, made up or not, and he'll print it as reliable. Someone on TF.N made up a story and sent it to him, and he printed it.

AICN - half the time it doesn't even load, pretty much everytime they post something new. And the ads always seem to be obnoxious... not real big on the crude humor either.

Other sites i check out are comingsoon.net, and darkhorizons.

I probably frequent chud.com the most. I like Harry Knowles' enthusiasm for movies but can't really defend his reporting style.

"Harry will willingly ass-carry the child of Ron Burgundy! ANCHORMAN review!"

That's currently the first headline on his site. It's the juvenile writing on the board like that that makes me hate the place.

And upon further inspection, I find another good example. They can't write a review of Garden State without making stalker comments regarding Natalie Portman.

Another reason to dislike AICN: anytime you express even the mildest criticism about the site, Harry's mindless followers accuse you of jealousy.

I've never been a big fan of AICN, so I just don't use the site. Simple answer if you ask me. Anyway, my fav sites for movie news are:

chud
darkhorizons
cinescape

I used to frequent DarkHorizons every day, but the redesign has left me completely cold.

Takes too long to load

Updates are now a memory game. The dating system seems to be hit and miss

Updates are no longer as interesting as they once were. Where they used to come mostly from tidbits sent to Garth, they now seem to be mainly culled from the industry journals, etc.

Now I mostly come here.

Oh, and as for AICN, Michael Corvin expressed my feelings above.

If I can't read it, I won't read it.

AICN sucks for many reasons. One, the site design is awful. Two, their message boards are a mess, they don't even stay in order. Three, their "news" these days sucks, and is way behind everyone else. Three, Knowles is a blubbering fool sometimes. Sure, it can be amusing, but he's really no more knoledgable than your average fanboy, but worst of all...his writing skill is close to worthless.

Listen, I still go to his site. But the simple fact is...

BRUCE CAMPBELL MIGHT BE IN A MOVIE ABOUT STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! is not really interesting news.

I've never been to the site. And, from these comments, I feel like a better person for having never done so.

Has any of you read the fan feedback of new news on aicn? It is like a pool of idiocy. It's pretty funny to laugh at their idiocy, if you have a sick sense of humor, like i do.

My problem with AICN is that there seems to be a lot of negativity. If a movie seems to be getting some mixed to negative reviews, they go to far w/ the negativity and say " it blows!!!!!!!!!!!!!" or "it sucks nuts!" Also, it seems to be a snowball effect: if one review is negative, then the rest of the reviews for that movie will be negative.

I go to:
bloody-disgusting.com
freezeddriedmovies.com
comingsoon.net
darkhorizons.com
cinescape.com
filmjerk.com
latinoreview.com
chud.com
creature-corner.com

not to mention the fifteen or so dvd websites.

I complete agree with you about whats become of Dark Horizon since the re-design. It used to be my fav movie site...I guess that now goes to this forum (as weird as it sounds).

Also Cinescape, I've been a fan of Patrick's since the Corona days.

I still read AICN out of habit, but I shouldn't have to try to skim through half a page of Harry rambling about his day and how happy he was before the movie because he got a new toy and other totally unnecessary crap.

Word.

And what is up with "I am Hercules the Strong"? I wonder if he gets off on that graphic that ends all his articles?

Anyway...
