Kurosawa is probably the most influential director ever. Seven Samurai has been remade, lifted from, and copied since its release. Rashomon was one of the first (if not the first) film to use a skewed timeline, which has been utilized in countless films since. And you guys have mentioned Star Wars; Well, without The Hidden Fortress, there would be no Star Wars. Kurosawa had so much influence over modern film, especially westerns, it's almost unbelievable.
Ok, the Hidden Fortress/Star Wars tie-in is not nearly as big as everyone makes it out to be. Lucas himself said the biggest influences were the POV of the story through the eyes of 2 minor characters and the occassional wipes in editing. That's pretty much it. I just wanted to clear that up. Because Criterion uses that to sell Hidden Fortress and the link is barely there.

3 words....(well 2 words and a letter)

AMERICAN HISTORY X

n. One that is of considerable importance or influence: sought the advice of policy influentials.

I need not say much about this film, if you have seen it you know what I am talking about, very very powerful and influential.

Groucho 07-06-04 01:19 AM

The only thing American History X influenced was the downward spiral to Tony Kaye's career.

So true. I don't find American History X as powerful as people make it out to be. And while we are at it, Donnie Darko isn't smart and Requiem for a Dream while depressing did not "open my eyes" to junkies and their problems. Well glad I got that off my chest.

ProjectMayhem 07-06-04 01:32 AM

Rashomon... easily.

RyoHazuki 07-06-04 01:43 AM

The Insider. Maybe.

Another that just popped into my head- Top Gun. From what I've heard, Navy enlistments skyrocketed for quite a while after the movie was released.
Didn't the same thing happen after the Village People's "In the Navy" topped the charts?

Yes, but for VERY different reasons.

sundog 07-06-04 12:28 PM

Didn't the Dardennes brothers' Rosetta propel changes in child labor laws (in Belgium I assume)?

Braveheart Shortly after it was released, Scotland voted for independance.
Birth of a Nation The Ku Klux Klan was restarted after having faded away.
My Neighbor Totoro Inspired its own ecology movement in Japan.

Some of these have been mentioned

Rebel without a Cause - teen angst was never the same.
Psycho- this movie plain freaked people out- the Jaws of the day-folks were afraid to get in the water (shower), one of the first movies to depict such a creepy psycho killer.
Easy Rider/Woodstock - helped bring the hippie culture to Middle America
Jaws
The Star Wars phenomenon- whole multiple viewing, the one of the first movies with extensive merchandising, the mythology, etc
Matrix - neoreglion and philosophy

Exit to Eden - I think there was a dip in the birth rate after seeing Rosie O'Donnell in leather.

matome 07-06-04 01:38 PM

Pulp Fiction is definitely one of them.

I think "Die Hard" back in 1988 was very influential.

Many movies have since tried to emulate the formula including 2 of its sequels, but nothing has come close to the exhilarating, over-the-top production that this movie created way back when.

I know it may not seem like the ideal influence, but if you think about it movies prior and then since, you might agree. Since the original we have had more "Die Hard on a boat", "Die Hard on a train", plane, etc...references than any other movie.

I think to this day it remains a quintessential hollywood action blockbuster...always mimicked, never quite duplicated!

I agree 100%, but...

This doesn't include movies that influenced other movies.

This does not include influencing future movies.
;)

Kill Bill must have influenced the purchasing of katanas in a dramatic way ;).

Bobby Shalom 07-07-04 10:23 AM

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice - helped bring wife swapping to middle America!

It Happened One Night - From IMDB.COM - The scene in which Clark Gable removes his shirt is credited as the number one cause for not only the decrease in undershirt sales for the following two years, but the implementation of product placements in movies to come.

The Deer Hunter - Numerous fatalities due to geniuses trying Russian Roulette for the first time - Darwinian effect.

lukewarmwater 07-07-04 12:03 PM

Jurassic Park - Before that movie no one knew what a velociraptor was.

Pulp Fiction

Toy Story

And I think lucas took more from seven samurai then he did hidden fortress

zooiiks 07-07-04 12:13 PM

The Crying Game

Probably the movie that re-started the whole "spoiler alert" and twist phenomen seen throughout contemporary pop culture.

Schindler's List

Brought about a new awareness of The Holocaust and spawned, I believe, The Holocaust Museum in DC.

Similarly, Saving Private Ryan brought about new recognition of WWII veterans including the recent WWII Memorial.

I agree, but ..........

spawned, I believe, The Holocaust Museum in DC.
I must clear up misinformation

1978, November 1
President Jimmy Carter establishes the President's Commission on the Holocaust.

1984, April 30
A symbolic ground breaking ceremony is held at the future site of the Museum.

1993, April 22
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is dedicated.

The early James Bond movies like From Russia With Love and Goldfinger influenced a lot of action films. I won't include Dr. No since that plays more like a spy thriller than an action flick.
