Decline? No way. Hanks is as big as ever. Ladykillers was offbeat by the Coen's brothers...I dont think anyone really expected 100 million for that.
Terminal is on it's way to around 100 million. It's highly comparable to You've Got Mail (though I agree a winter release would've yielded higher grosses). Otherwise...his last film before these was Catch me if you Can...big hit. Castaway...huge hit. Road to perdition...solid hit. I'd say it's safe to say he's still a big star. You take Terminal, remove Tom Hanks, and it wouldn't make half the money it is. |

Originally posted by Groucho I think Hanks is trying to relive his glory days. I read in Variety this morning that his next film is going to be called The Retarded Guy Who Went into Space and Died of AIDS. |
I think the guy should go back to the kind of movies he made before winning oscars, anything after and including philadelphia was crap, IMHO,
not sure why he'd turn in being funny, for a some recognition, and drop the spielberg ties already, geez, that guy couldn't make a good film, if his life depended on it.. Volunteers, man with one red shoe, big, bachelor party, punchline, burbs, on and on were great.. of what the hell are you thinking Tom Hanks? |

$$$ does not display the quality of an actor, yet it is the yard stick for Hollywood. Then again, we know that there are good films and cinema from other places than Hollywood (example: Pulp Fiction).
|
The funny thing is, some of Hollywood's biggest "stars", including most of the females, haven't had a ton of box office success. So judging Hanks by his recnt films is faulty at best, ridiculous at worst.
As mentioned, no Coen brothers film makes much money. Ladykillers was no exception. I don't know why anyone would think this movie would be different box office wise from their previous attempts. As for the Terminal, I'd wait a little bit before giving a verdict on that one. It was not a "summer" movie, and still may pull a decent run. |
I still liked The Terminal even if it didn't do that great.

Re: Tom Hanks career in decline?
I think it is now! In 2004, there was hope. Hope sailed by 2012 - I haven't enjoyed a movie of his since Cast Away. The latest one, with 9/11 in the backdrop, stunk. It has nothing to do with Hanks being in it, or not in it - the fact that even Hanks couldn't save that movie tells you something.
He's been picking crappy scripts - nothing worthwhile in all these years? And I thought things went to shit for Denzel Washington (although his new movie "Flight" will be a comeback of sorts for him). |

Re: Tom Hanks career in decline?
Screw you guys.
Tom Hanks is awesome. His movies are excellent, whether or not they're financially successful. And he does a ton of philanthropy with his money. I think that Tom Hanks is a model for public image. The acting jobs he takes, the cameos here and there, the philanthropy work. It's like he was a perfectly engineered experiment for positive PR. |

Update: this never got made. The script was slightly reworked, and eventually the end product was The Da Vinci Code.
And Cloud Atlas is one of the best films Hanks has ever been in. |

Re: Tom Hanks career in decline?
I can't stand Tom Hanks. I'd rather see ten bad Jason Statham movies--in a row--than sleep through one good Hanks movie.
|
Re: Tom Hanks career in decline?
I was a little disappointed that he wasn't in The Expendables 2.

Tom Hanks is over. It's all about his son, Chet Haze:

I think he's just at the point in his career where he is established and comfortable, so he is able to choose projects that appeal to him and not necessarily to the mass market. His roles have more substance than in the past, even if they are not box office smashes.

But seriously I really don't see him on a decline. He produced big name HBO stuff, and it's not like Cloud Atlas is going to bring anybody down except maybe the Wachowskis. |
Re: Tom Hanks career in decline?
My only problem with Tom Hanks is that you are always aware that you are watching Tom Hanks.
I guess you could say that about alot of actors, but more so with him for some reason. |
