Intellectually stimulating movies
Ok, I'm watching Andrei Rublev and I wonder. Are there other films like this? Are there other intelligent films involving people searching for answers to unanswerable questions? Questions about faith or humanity. I'd really like to see some movies that really make you question yourself and your existence.

Maybe you should check out White Chicks
EDIT: (For real) I'd suggest checking out the Seventh Seal by Bergman |

The lost highway still confuses me now. But if you're looking for a movie with questions, then this is the movie to watch.
|
Chris Marker's 1982 Sans Soleil. A tour-de-force documentary (you don't have to like it) spanning from Japan to Iceland to America and back again that weaves intricate images about world culture and faith that just seeps into your subconscious.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Nine replies, and nobody has mentioned Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice yet?

Thanks for all the choices everyone.

Check out Mindwalk with Sam Waterson, John Heard and Liv Ullmann.

The Sweet Hereafter is one of the most deeply moving films I have ever seen.
It's non-linear and requires (or I think it does) repeated viewings. I did a report about it in a film class. I had already seen it 4 or 5 times, and then I watched it and wrote the paper in the middle of the night. I did well on that assignment. It's about hope, love, loss, responsibility, drifting away from your grown children. It's a masterpiece in the truest since of the word. I think everyone should see it. I see several others have listed it above as well. Atom Egoyian is the director, Sarah Polley, Ian Holm and Bruce Greenwood star. BTW - don't watch if you've had a bad day. |
