What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

When signing up, put down BadlyDrawnBoy in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

3. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

4. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

5. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

6. This weeks contest features a Gmail Invite Giveaway for the three best Week-To-Date performers as of Friday, July 1. Because this is based on percentages, even new players have a chance to compete! Note: if you are new, you must sign up (including posting your information in this thread) by Sunday, June 27 at 12am Pacific.

Remember, new players: add this week's "Bottom Feeder" (BadlyDrawnBoy) as your referral when signing up!

Please check for your name on the list. Last week it was mentioned that there are 72 people in the league, but I only have 71 on there.

I think your missing DVDTalk_DVD_Smurf.

Of course I'm missing someone on my personal list and I can't figure out who. I have 71 (including DVD Smurf).

I'm actually having a good week (+14.73%). I hope it continues.

Man... The "Cold Cash" thing where you try to win $50,000 has been brutal to me lately. I haven't won in over 3 weeks.

Why you gotta jinx FH911? Now it's climbing again.

Weird. I am missing DVD Smurf from my spreadsheet (which drives the leaderboard), but I have him in "My League" over at HSX...which totals 71 people. So, I added him to the spreadsheet but I'm still missing somebody behind the scenes. Ugh.

I covered my short at $46.98

I have decided the money I made after commissions was enough for me. I am sitting out this weekend and going to try some daytrading instead. I am not sure enogh of FH911 either way to gamble on it with a short at halt any more.

I figure I am at $8.7 million now so I only need $100k a day more to hit my 9 million goal by the end of the weekend goal.

I can live with that.

I also decided to get out of spdrc.

Might be some dumb moves might be smart only this weekend will tell

Now that gives me 73 - the only thing I can see is that I have both of shill's accounts in there (swh, swh2).

Hmm.. FH911 is on pace to make $32M this weekend.

Of course, it's only been playing in 2 theaters and seems to be selling out every show. Now if that will translate into the other 866 theaters? Hmmm.. makes you wonder.

FH911 is being brutal to me - I thought I had the 2 spot back but I dropped $350K or so yesterday because I had it shorted.

This morning I went to see the film and the I heard just about every showing was sold out. Is it because its California, or is the film attracting a segment that normally doesn't venture to the cineplex? I think we may have the "Passion of Christ" of documentaries here...bottom line, I'm gonna long the stock now and hopefully recover the money I lost.

damn_you, gcribbs, you jinxed it

From Variety.com

'FAHRENHEIT' OVERHEATS FRIDAY B.O.
Boffo sales put doc in running for No. 1 spot
Buzz works.

After weeks of debate and media coverage, "Fahrenheit 9/11" opened today far better than expected. An estimate of just how well it could do is difficult to make, but as of 3 p.m. on the West Coast, it looks as if Michael Moore's doc could sell between $6 million and $8 million worth of tickets on its first day.

There went 300K down the drain.

Woah - FH911 had a 13 point swing today - so I recovered my losses from yesterday but the question now is will I still have it once it adjusts?

I hope you hold it all since I would hate to jump over you because of FH911

I remember how it felt when I fell down a bit due to AW80D.

It really sucks.

So what did everyone do for the weekend stocks?

I passed on all of them.

I would have been short on Fh911.Long on notebook. short on two brothers. Oh and long on white chicks because dumb sells.

If a gun was to my head that is.

I shorted this at $55 and I am going to ride it out... unless it drops a ton

Well, FH911 made 8.2 million yesterday and was the #1 movie in America.

I shorted it. My portfolio is doomed, doomed I say.
