What will be #1 this weekend/How will the newbies fare?
I'm going to give the Hogwarts students the edge and think they will retain the top spot. I won't get into specific numbers, because I don't like playing that game, but I will say that I see Chroncles of Riddick opening okay but not that impressive, and Garfield being a total flop. (I hope I'm right about Garfield.)
While I don't see Stepford Wives raking in huge amounts, I gotta give the cast of the movie credit for going into overdrive this week doing PR. While the story may be shallow, this movie seems to boast the largest name cast of the summer, and that might take it a ways.

I'll leave the $ amounts to the HSX folks... but here's my ranking for this weekend:
1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Shrek 2
3. The Chorincles of Riddick
4. The Stepford Wives
5. The Day After Tomorrow
6. Saved!
7. Garfield
8. Troy
9. Raising Helen
10. Soul Plane
I'll be seeing Shrek 2 with two of my kids today or tomorrow and then Riddick tomorrow or the next day.

My Guesses:
1. Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban - $45m
2. Shrek 2 - $22.8m
3. Chronicles of Riddick - $20m
4. Garfield - $18.9m
5. The Day After Tomorrow - $14m
6. Stepford Wives - $10m
7. Raising Helen - $5m
8. Troy - $3m
9. Mean Girls - $1.8m
10. Van Helsing - $1.2m
I think Stepford will tank, Garfield will succeed slightly due to kids, and Chronicles of Riddick will do alright due to lack of Scifi this summer.
But I know nothing, and usually suck at predictions.

I hope Garfield doesn't hit it big, but after Scooby Doo I getting a $50 million plus opening, I'll buy anything.
I hope Stepford Wives gets a good word of mouth and can sustain for some weeks, but that seldom happens with dark comedies as they play to a niche crowd most of the time. I would say this is one movie that they probably should have waited until late September/early October to release.

This week is going to be a scatter shot week. Harry Potter will remain number one for one sole reason: there are three "high profile" films coming out on the same weekend that are attracted to different audiences.
The Chronicles of Riddick is geared for mostly male teenagers.
The Stepford Wives is geared mostly towards women.
Garfield is geared mostly towards children or people with low IQs and are devoid of common sense.
Parents will probably take their kids to the more high profile Harry Potter and Shrek over Garfield and word of mouth hasn't been so kind on Garfield so far. The Chronicles of Riddick and The Stepford Wives' box office gross might be too close to call. It all depends on who goes to the movies this weekend. It might help that The Stepford Wives will open on 250+ more screens then The Chronicles of Riddick, but that could also hurt it. We'll see Saturday morning...
My predictions:
1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - $45 million.
2. The Chronicles of Riddick - $33 million.
3. The Stepford Wives - $25 million.
4. Shrek 2 - $17 million.
5. Garfield: The Movie - $15 million.
6. The Day After Tomorrow - $13 million.
7. Raising Helen - $3 million.
8. Troy - $2 million.
9. Mean Girls - $1 million.
10. Soul Plane - $1 million.
