What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

When signing up, put down BadlyDrawnBoy in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

3. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

4. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

5. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

Remember, new players: add this week's "Bottom Feeder" (BadlyDrawnBoy) as your referral when signing up!

Well, I've fallen off the Top 10 again. I haven't lost much, I'm just stalled. I blame Harry Potter.

Congrats to gcribbs, who is premiering on the Leaderboard this week.

Thanks Groucho

I figure I will drop out again since it is hard to have a run of good luck continue.

I have be trying to get into the top 10 for the week and I made my goal. My be number 1 goal seems less likely

BY the way I blame Potter also

By the way what do people think of Saved? It is opening up in 500 more theaters so that should be good news I would think.

Note that unless Saved! gets on more than 650 screens, it will still be considered to be in "Limited" release. Which means that it won't halt, and it won't adjust until it delists 12 weeks after release.

that is good news however since it has more time to make money before delisting I would assume.

If it hits 650 theaters then I guess it halts that weekend then takes 4 weekends till delisting I guess.

it just looks interesting because of the cast and the money it has made on only 31 screens so far.

Well the news about saved made me a nice amount so far with a +0.91 on my 50000 shares. So far it's looking like a good day. FH911 also bringing in more cash. do folks actually believe it will go for this high amount of 48.04? I mean it has to be limited release the first week or so right? Glad to see the shrek2 warrent finally kicking over to the million dollar mark.

I don't blame potter, sure the call didn't bring in much, but atleast I didn't lose anything on it.

It is opening in 1000 theaters the first week so it will not make anywhere close to that unless they have a huge amount of screens per theater.

I think it will make around 5-8 million the first weekend at most so the adjust should be $23ish at most.

I have thought about shorting it since it could make me a ton although it would be just my luck it would end up opening in 10000 theaters instead

it is now saying 1000+ so maybe they are trying to get a wider release.

Even with a wider release I don't see it doing the numbers it's currently at. for the time being if you own it let it grow a bit more and try to get on early when it comes down.

now in the low 46's. ha ha ha. The thing is way over valued. folks should treat it for what it is. an Indie film that got lucky and made media coverage. low theater count (think soul plane) and a limited audiance since many hate moore.

Riding it for all it's worth.

I'm shorting the hell out of it. I've made over $50k in the last half hour alone.

What do you think the weekend movies will do?

theater counts from Boxofficemojo:
1 - Garfield 3,130
2 - The Stepford Wives 3,057
3 - The Chronicles of Riddick 2,758

I think Riddick will hit 30 million or close to that.

I think Garfield can make it to 20 million.

I think Stepford will end up with 15 million.

I could see both Garfield and Stepford being lower although I think Riddick will be more review proof since it has lots of action.

Garfield is going to have to do some terrible per screen numbers (say NYMN) to not make some cash. Riddick's theater count is the question here. hmmm.

Van Helsing did 14k per theater so you can do big numbers per theater. multiplied times the theaters that Riddick has would be over 38 million so 27-30 million is very possible.

Shrek did 25k per theater the first week and 17k per theater the second.

To hit 30 million Riddick will need to do 11k per theater. High yes but not impossible.

Of course what do I know

The problem is that it takes a bunch to play agressive. I have been more agressive and I have had to tie up 3-4 million of my port in a stock or two playing hunches. they happened to pay off although had they gone the other way i would have been way down.

It also takes a ton of time. I did it because I wanted to get into the top 10 at least once.

I doubt I will keep putting the time in to stay in the top 10.
