Me:
Prisoner of Azkaban
Chamber of Secrets
Sorceror's Stone

The hub:
Sorceror's Stone

He doesn't like Harry Potter one bit. This is a bit ironic, since I had no interest in the series until he bought me the first movie on DVD. The Potter hater has made his wife into a ravening fan.

I know he was terribly bored by the movie this afternoon, but he was sweet to go with me. He has a problem with me going to movies all by my lonesome. I figure it's just payback for making me watch that horrible anime crap on Cartoon Network all week.

Jackskeleton 06-05-04 12:49 AM

Chamber of Secrets
Prisoner of Azkaban
Philosphers stone

caiman 06-05-04 12:53 AM

1. Harry Potter and the _____________.
2. Harry Potter and the _____________.
3. Harry Potter and the _____________.

I'll fill them in once I get around to seeing the movies.

RoboDad 06-05-04 02:25 AM

1. Sorcerer's Stone
2. Chamber of Secrets
3. Prisoner of Azkaban (and actually, the more I think on it, the more distant this gets into third place)

And, for what it's worth, I would rate the same three books as follows:

1. Prisoner of Azkaban (by a wide margin)
2. Sorcerer's Stone
3. Chamber of Secrets

This is my current view also. My ranking of the books would be completely different:

Goblet of Fire
Prisoner of Azkaban
Chamber of Secrets
Philospher's/Sorcerer's Stone
Order of the Phoenix

I agree with Robodad. My ranking of the movies (none of which I've particularly liked so far) are as follows:

1. CoS
2. PS
3. PoA

Book ranking would probalby be:

1. Goblet of fire
2. Prisoner of azkaban
3. order of the phoenix
4. PS
5. CoS

I just don't feel that any of the books so far have translated particularly well to the screen. Considering how much I disliked PoA, I don't know how they're going to handle goblet of fire.

This is difficult because they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Columbus' films are too literal and not particularly imaginative but tell the stories in a logical, fairly complete way (given the problems of translating books to film). Cuaron's film is visually stunning and imaginitive but has huge gaps in the story. He took the longest book and made the (so far) shortest movie. I think the film should have been at least 2:45 (only 4 minutes longer than CoS) and more probably 3:00 to flesh out the story and give it its due. All the setup stuff seemed to be sketched in until the

time travel
sequence at the end which was done very well.

I'd like to have seen the strengths of Columbus combined with the strengths of Cuaron in these films. They could have been amazing.

cruzness 06-06-04 09:18 AM

Movies:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban (even though I think the running should have been a little longer to flesh out some of the plotlines)
2. Sorceror's Stone
3. Chamber of Secrets

The books:
1. Order of the Poenix
2. Goblet of Fire
3. Prisoner of Azkaban
4. Sorceror's Stone
5. Chamber of Secrets

My wife hated OotP because of the fact that it is such a dark book
Spoiler:
Since Dumbledore seems to be losing control of Hogwarts
which is why I liked it. Not your typical Harry Potter.

Hokeyboy 06-06-04 10:55 AM

MurraySiskind 06-06-04 11:00 AM

2. Scorcerer's Stone and Chamber are equally bland.

grunter 06-06-04 01:48 PM

3. Sorcerer's Stone

Books:

1. Goblet of Fire
2. Chamber of Secrets
3. Prisoner of Azkaban
4. Sorcerer's Stone
5. Order of the Phoenix - (which just DID NOT follow through on the Lord of the Rings style build-up "Goblet of Fire" - a major disappointment)

matome 06-06-04 03:43 PM
