What movie has the best cast in cinema history thread! (name the movie)

In discussing "Cop Land" in DVD Talk someone had mentioned it had the best cast in movie history. I don't think so, I just think it was a couple Oscar caliber and mediocre players who gelled in an ensemble due to great script and direction.

But that lead to an interesting topic: what movie do you think has the best cast in movie history?

Name the movie and if you want list the cast.

3 right off the top of my head, I'm sure many more will mention them, especially regarding their disappointment with the films despite their strengths:

Around the World in 80 Days- quite possibly the worst Best Picture winner ever. It's still duking it out with The Greatest Show on Earth for the title. Still, it's fun spotting all of the superstars.

Mars Attacks!- Nicholson, Brosnan, Close, De Vito, Bening, Short, Parker, Fox, Steiger, Portman, Black, Grier, Applegate, Jones. This cast is so great none of the first names are even needed, everyone knows exactly who these people are. Too bad Burton had to round up the greatest cast he will ever have for the laziest and most half-assed I'm-just-doin-this-shit-for-the-paycheck Film of his career.

True Romance- Pretty decent flick. Fantastic all-star cast. James Gandolfini. Patricia Arquette. Tom Sizemore. Chris Penn. Jack Black(again!). Samuel L. Jackson. Balki Bartokomous. Christopher Walken. Christian Slater. Brad Pitt. That funny white-guy that black filmmakers love to use.....Michael Rapaport. Val Kilmer. Gary Oldman. Dennis Hopper. The only thing cooler than this cast would be if Tarantino somehow jumped into a time-machine, bitch-slapped Tony Scott and took over the reins of this production with this cast and directed this movie with his own original script and original ending. All would be right with the world.

Heat had a personally satisfying one:

Al Pacino
Robert De Niro
Val Kilmer
Ashley Judd
Tom Sizemore
Jon Voight
Mykelti Williamson
Tom Noonan
Jeremy Piven
Natalie Portman
Henry Rollins
Ricky Harris (Stand up-comedian. Saw him live at Def Jam LA)
Amy Brenneman
Dennis Haysbert
Wes Studi
Tone Loc (One of the best voices ever)
Danny Trejo
Thomas Rosales Jr. (Familiar stunt man)
Ted Levine
Jerry Trimble (Kickboxer!)
William Fichtner
Hank Azaria

JFK is another favorite.

PixyJunket 06-03-04 04:06 PM

Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown come to mind for me. Both had outstanding casts.

matome 06-03-04 04:19 PM

<i>Heat</i>, as mentioned above.

The Poseidon Adventure
Oscar winners: Gene Hackman, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson.
Worth mentioning: Leslie Nielsen & Roddy McDowall

Goldberg74 06-03-04 04:31 PM

Either of the Ocean's Eleven movies.

Dick Tracy is another one under the "Great Cast/Bad Movie" category.

And I'd like to throw in the Toy Story movies for their great voice casting.

slop101 06-03-04 04:42 PM

How about a film that actually uses it's good cast like it should - therefore, films like A Bridge Too Far and Poseidon Adventure are out.

My vote for a great ensemble cast where every actor is used well and appropriately, is Glenn Garry Glennross

I think Rosario Dawson just signed up on it too. And don't leave out Rick Gomez. This guy's a cool actor.

Kal-El 06-03-04 06:40 PM

I always thought A Few Good Men had a powerhouse cast:

Tom Cruise
Jack Nicholson
Demi Moore
Kiefer Sutherland
Kevin Bacon
Kevin Pollak
James Marshall
JT Walsh
