Suspiria - remake (2018, D: Guadagnino) S: Swinton, Johnson, Moretz, Goth

From today's Dark Horizons news update.

Suspiria: Dimension is set ro remake Dario Argento's 1977 horror classic about a "European ballet academy that fronts for a secret witches' coven" according
to Coming Soon.

Geofferson 04-08-03 04:50 PM

Wow, not sure what to think about this one.

Pants 04-08-03 05:18 PM

I hope Bret Ratner directs!

Josh-da-man 04-08-03 06:33 PM

They'd better change the high concept to something else.

It's 2003, and the concept of "coven of witches" just isn't threatening anymore, let alone politically correct.

I mean, I've interacted with a lot of witches/Wiccans on the 'net, and they're generally the nicest group of people I've ever dealt with online.

And I should be against "Suspiria" remade on general principle, but I'm really at a point where I don't care if something I like gets remade. I guess good horror films are so rare these days, that I just want something halfway decent to come out.

Sessa17 04-08-03 07:24 PM

NOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Argento is my all-time favorite director. and this makes me sick. I am so F'n sick to death of remakes, & ESPECIALLY remakes that don't need to be made. Although not one of my favorite Argento movies, there are only 2 or 3 directors in Hollywood that could even slightly do an Argento movie justice. And I gauranty none of them will be directing the remake.

Someone needs to be slashed, gutted and burned.

And thrown into a room full of razor wire....
Then hung. ;)

The remake will suck for the fact that Argento is not at helm and Suspiria does not need a remake. It will also suck for the fact that you know that the producers/writers/directors will try and add some sort of plot to the film. Argento is one of the few directors who can pull off "style over substance," if the producers/writers/directors try "style over substance" for their remake, they will fail. If they try to add plot, they will fail. Whatever they do, they will fail.

Oh yeah, there'd be no Goblin score which will also make the remake fail. :)

You got that right... although if they put Marilyn Manson on remix duties it could be interesting, i thought the Resident Evil theme was great. He's the only one who comes to mind that would suit the task.

Is this the first Argento remake? I'm all for a cult (especially Euro-cult) director getting attention, but not this kind of attention. Suspiria will always have a place in horror aficionados' hearts for its bold technicolor photography and an almost complete disregard for logical narrative structure (true horror is irrational, after all), something today's Hollywood isn't too renowed for. Screw this.

cultshock 04-09-03 01:43 AM

Yes, Tyler, I believe this would be the first Argento remake. I never thought I would see this happen. There's no way that this could turn out to be a good thing. Suspiria is illogically perfect the way it is. What possibly could Hollywood add to it??

PalmerJoss 04-09-03 10:55 AM

Suspiria creeped me out to no end, and I doubt even the most talented directors out there today could do it better than Argento, so I will not be looking forward to this. Just about the only horror sequel/prequel I'm looking forward to is The Exorcist(can't remember the subtitle).

If Hollywood insists on remaking so many movies, why not leave the classics alone, and remake bad ones that weren't done right the first time? "Ishtar" and "Battlefield Earth" would get my vote. :D

There's an easy solution. Don't watch them.

PolloDiablo 04-09-03 05:04 PM

First Texas Chainsaw Massacre and now Suspiria..... I can't stand watching some of the best horror films ever made be butchered like this.... it would be one thing if the original creators were getting some credit for their ideas here, but most of the idiot kids that will go see these crap remakes have probably never heard of the originals much less appreciate them. I think there should be some kind of rule that some kind of disclaimer should be placed at the beginnings of movies like these stating that this film is a remake of a classic film and that if you do enjoy this please make sure to go and see the inspiration behind it. I know this probably seems like some pointless rant but I just despise seeing great cinema degraded in this manner.

Or why not remake one of Argento's god-awful films like The Cat O'Nine Tails or Trauma or Phantom of the Opera?

:)

Phantom of the Paradise?
That's dePalma

I can watch them all I want. I can't criticize what I don't see. As long as I don't give them a dime of my money, which I don't to see them. There is nothing wrong with watching them.

Matthew Chmiel 04-09-03 08:36 PM

I meant Phantom of the Opera. I dont know why I put Paradise (considering I find it one of DePalma's few films that he has made that are actually watchable ;)).

I'm not sure what's worse, remaking this or the upcoming Dawn of the Dead remake.

In my opinion that's one of the maestro's best, right after Suspiria, Tenebre and Deep Red. In any case it's way better than the other two you mentioned.

Nobody said you couldn't. Instead of whining about remakes, why don't you just skip them since you're so sick of them?

I have a better idea. How about I skip them, as I already said I do. AND whine about them. B/c it's my right to do so. I'm honored you are so hung up on my movie preferences though.

Yup you caught me. I'm hung up on what you watch. You say you skip them here but on your last post you say you watch them.
