THX-1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut - Coming to theaters!

WATCH THE COOL NEW RE-RELEASE TRAILER HERE!

Before there was Star Wars, there was THX 1138.
In 1971, a visionary filmmaker named George Lucas created a chillingly prescient look at a disturbing future world as his feature film debut. Years ahead of its time, THX 1138 has since attracted a strong following, with its cutting edge visual and sound experience, and provocative and resounding messages.

"We wanted to make a different kind of film, and I hope when audiences see it today, they will find it to be as intriguing as we envisioned," says Lucas. The film stars Robert Duvall, and is produced by Francis Ford Coppola and his revolutionary American Zoetrope studios.

This fall, this debut film will return as THX 1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut. It will come to theaters as a special limited engagement, and then to DVD.

On September 14, Warner Home Video and American Zoetrope will make available The George Lucas Director's Cut DVD release. The Two-Disc Collector's Set features the film meticulously restored and a second disc filled with new and classic bonus material. For Star Wars fans, it's the perfect prelude to the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set due out on September 21.

Preceding the DVD release, on September 10, a 20-city theatrical release of the film is planned, including Ann Arbor, MI; Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; Minneapolis, MN; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; San Francisco, CA: Seattle, WA; Portland, OR, and others.

Director's Cut? What's he changing?

I love the film though.

That trailer looks great. I think I could see a few of the new shots in the trailer, and they look fairly cohesive with the sets they already had. I hope these changes are only putting in new SFX shots and not drastically recutting the film.

I like how George put his name in the new title...because if it was just "THX-1138: The Director's Cut" half of America wouldn't know who directed the movie!

Does Robert Duvall shoot first in the new version?

Since it hits DVD so soon after its rerelease, that probably means it will only be showing in the usual 5 or 6 cities. Louisville, KY not being one of them.

Wow, that trailer is really great. The new FX looks very good and cohesive. Actually I bet it won't even be called a Directors Cut when it comes down to it, it will just be THX-1138, because this will be the only real version according to Lucas.

OK, I admit it: I've never seen this movie.

Worth a blind buy when it hits DVD?

No, it is not.

I wonder when we're getting American Graffiti: The Special Edition.

jesus - looks like a new movie. I never saw it and had no idea it had decent production values. Looks like it did anyway. I always thought it was some student film low-budget garbage.

He made two THX films, IIRC. The first one, the student film, was extremely short and low budget. The second one was more of an indie film than a student film.

I'm a little apprehensive about the "director's cut." The THX-1138 that I saw was rather hard-edged, with violence and full-frontal nudity. Cleaning up the video and updating some special effects and adding some more footage would be great, but I'd hate to see a sanitized PG-13 version. But I won't assume anything yet.

You can go check out http://www.filmratings.com and see that Lucas has submitted the film to the MPAA:

THX-1138: The George Lucas Director's Cut (2004)
Warner Bros. Pictures Inc.
R Rated R for some sexuality/nudity.
Previously rated (GP) in (71).

might as well assume... If there was full frontal in the version you saw - you can count on the pen0rs and boobies being replaced with walkie talkies.

wow! from no original trilogy until after esipsode 3 is done, to the original trilogy and thx-1138 out before episode 3. both with new directors cuts. maybe lucas is paying more attention to the old stuff and letting someone else work on episode 3, ala esb. probably not.

Is anyone else besides me afraid that he's digitally adding Jar Jar Binks and Ewoks to the movie for "comedy relief" because that was the way he *always* intended it, but he just didn't have the technology back then?

The trailer looks awesome.. but I honestly never even heard of this movie till now. Is it any good, or is it one of those early 70's bad acting sci fi movies?

Well, it doesn't look like they've drastically changed this. The new SFX looked pretty good, all in all. I'd give this one a shot in the theater.
