What are the best adaptations that are quite UNfaithful to the source material?

Inspired by the Constantine thread, the consensus of which is that it looks nothing like the comic it's based on, but seems interesting anyway...

I'll get things started.

Blade Runner
- Nothing like "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep" really, but still good, no?

Total Recall
- Another Dick adaptation that was folled around with extensively, but can be considered a great action/sci-fi film, even if it's not too faithful.

Anything else? (I do ask to keep the bashing to a minimum)

The Shining
Big changes in focus, ending, characters, and detail.

Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Big switch in tone from "Red Alert" (adapted that same year in the film Fail Safe)

Forrest Gump is very different from the novel. Forrest has many more wacky adventures in the more comical novel, plus
Spoiler:
his mother and Jenny both live, although he doesn't end up with Jenny in the novel.

alien series borrowed extensively from Starship Troopers. In Aliens one of the marines even said if it was another bug hunt.

While it's a clear influence, it isn't an adaptation and so doesn't count.

...erm... a pretty neat trick to pull:
* "Aliens" was first released on 7/18/1986
* "Starship Troopers" was first released on 11/7/1997

. . . . . .

Swish!

What makes it funnier is that he researched the release dates to make that point.

I'm confident Hendrik was making a joke (He's not a stupid man)... if he wasn't, then boy howdy! That's a mistake.

...Steering this back on topic

Starship Troopers
- Changed heavily from the book, from story details even down to the uniforms; no longer the sci-fi classic, but an excellent satire.

Indeed!

I read that book before I saw the movie. I was SO looking forward to the juvenile T-Rex and the Stegasaurus...

... yet I was disappointed when various parts of the first novel showed up in the movie's sequel.

Troy was good despite its jarring departures from Homer.

I think he meant the excellent book, the source that the lame-ass movie ripped to shreds.

I'd still say that was a fairly close adaptation. I can understand the lack of Gods.

But making Achilles straight? That's just silly.

"The Lost World" (JP 2)

The movie is alright but is a mess when compared to the book.

Hannibal strayed quite a bit from the book, and some will argue that it was a good thing to do so.

In all honesty, neither were much to write home about.

I can't believe that this hasn't been mentioned yet, I thought it might have been what started the thread...

Adaptation. While I haven't read The Orchid Thief, I tend to doubt it's too similar to what was in the movie

All of the movies so far have at least a passing resemblance to their source material.

For a complete departure, have a look at "Exit to Eden."

The novel by Anne Rice, writing as Anne Rampling, is erotic, near hardcore pornography, loaded with S&M and every kink imaginable.

The movie is a lightweight comedy with Dan Ayckroyd and Rosie O'Donnell as a couple of undercover cops.

Don't forget the amnesia and the Swiss Bank account number implanted in his thigh.
