There's a scene in Dead Ringers where Elliot and Beverly (both played by Jeremy Irons) are walking down the hall at the clinic. The interaction between the characters made you completely forget it was the same actor.

Very subtle, yet very effective. I can be pretty critical when it comes to effects and this scene always impressed me.

The only thing that remotely makes you forget detail is the amount of motion blur added to cover the flaws.

The one that I wasn't aware of was the coolest ever!

I dont see your point devilshalo...those screencaps completely matchup with the real actors...when Keanu's spinnin on the pole...it looks just like Keanu...when their in the air looks like like Keanu and Hugo...I think you just disproved yourself...

and it aint like this is just creating some CG monster...which anyone can do nowadays...this is making CG actors do things right in front of camera in slow-mo...reg. speed...and doing things that no one can do...its an insane challenge...and compared with other movies...I think they pulled it off gloriously!

Yep, I was going to say some of the more subtle effects of Contact. The one that blew me away is the shot of the bathroom mirror to reveal the photo of Ellie and her dad on top of the toilet. I'd seen this movie a number of times before I found out that was CGI.

I'm not one to b*tch and whine about CG, but the burly brawl looks good and bad at the same time. Frankly, people whining about CG has gotten downright pathetic, and the only time they really defend CG is a film they're a fanboy of.

But back to the point, I'd have to say the T-Rex attack in JP!

Funny you should mention that. A woman, who used to work where I work, has a brother who did the CGI for Neo's coat during those sequences. After finishing with that gig he moved over to Dreamworks to work on Shark Story. I wanted to tell him how bad some of his CGI work was but I was hoping for some Dreamworks swag :)

Honestly, the issues with the Burly Brawl in terms of looking somewhat fake were not the stellar CG. The CG work was fabulous. But quite simply you have 101 humans doing things that by gosh, they can't do, with cameras moving in ways that they can't move. By that fact, the eye knows this isn't possible. And while it's true that you can see the gloss of the CG characters, let's be honest. As a technical achievement, the Burly Brawl is something that really hadn't been done before. And quite frankly, it would've been IMPOSSIBLE to do any other way. I think it's a fun scene, and if you guys would learn this thing called suspension of disbelief you'd have a better time. If I can buy Sinbad fighting some blue screened skeletons, there's no way I'm going to say the Burly Brawl is poor effects work.

I mean, in terms of just flawless effects work, I think Spielberg's AI is one of the most fluid films out there in terms of CG work. But on the other hand, nothing they did in that film is nearly as ambitious as some of the stuff they did in Matrix, so quite frankly, I understand the disparity.

well said!

what the actual topic is

there is no doubt that the Smith gangbang was quite an achievement...BUT...just as SW Episode II was nothing more than a 2 hour demo-reel for Skywalker Sound and ILM Studios, this scene was nothing more than candy that didnt come out as sweet as expected.

The topic was Most realistic SFX sequence - The Smith gangbang was not realistic looking at all and the fact that some of it was slo-mo, made it even easier to tell and cringe about.

If they had actually gotten any of it actually look realistic, then it might have looked so obvious, but there is no one who knows anything at all about computer graphics that can look at that scene and call it realistic looking.

This is not to say that I could have done it myself or could have done better - but that wasnt realistic and the Wachowski's and everyone else involved seriously understimate their audience if they thought that scene was good enough to call realistic - Pixar could have done better, and they make CG cartoons

I certainly didn't notice that Tom Hanks' mouth was CG'd shut in a scene in Road to Perdition until it was mentioned on the commentary.
