If you like Gilliam, you'll love this film. For me, it was one of the most disturbing and unpleasant films I've ever seen - but that's what Gilliam fans love, of course. Personally I like weird films, but this one was so nasty I wish I hadn't seen it. A sweet little girl surrounded by drug addicts, death, mental illness and various Gilliam gross-outs is not my idea of a worthwhile evening at the cinema. I kept hoping she might somehow escape all this horror into a world of fantasy, but she never does (even though her finger puppets are wonderful).
If you like to leave a film feeling depressed and disturbed, go for it - but don't bring your girlfriend!

Stupid, stupid question:
Why does Gilliam try so hard to make his movies difficult to watch?
I mean, would it kill him just leave out the absurdly-inhumanly-vicious parts that seem to intrude on the more fantastical elements of the movie?
While I appreciate an occasional juxtapose for comparison's sake, he doesn't (IMO) use them in a way that makes a point by contrasting the vicious and the imagination.
He just seems to like to include ridiculous, suspension-of-disbelief-breaking ugliness, perhaps as a statement that the whimsical can't exist without the inhumane?

I was pretty much too busy/not in town when 'Tideland' played in DC for it's week long run at Landmark's E Street Cinema. Gonna have to wait for it's February home video release.
The main flaw I had for Brothers Grimm was the casting, both Heath and Matt seemed soooo out of their element.

What about the writing though? I am a HUGE Terry Gilliam fan but this movie was a turd IMO.

Import the Russian DVD. ALLDVD.CA's been selling it for a few months now. I picked it up back in August I think. The quality was great, but I didn't like to movie so I sold my copy on Ebay.
