I do believe that was the reason.

To expand on Rypro's answer, you have to accept that a lot of Tyler's teachings do make some sense. The Narrator had to do something amazing and mind-blowing (without blowing his mind out), similar to the acid burn scene where he teaches him to accept the pain. Inflicting that much pain upon himself and living proved to himself that he didn't need an alternate persona to be what he wanted to be. From then on, he can be tough if he needs to be, but he doesn't have to be a psycho.

As for Bob's bitch tits, I think one of the commentaries mentions them creating a "tit suit" that looked decent, but they figured it was just better to leave his shirt on. I can picture Bob starting to take off his shirt and all the other guys going "woah there fella! TMI!"

And I caught the flashes the first time. They're fairly obvious.

Basically, yes. When Norton's character (his name isn't Jack) pulled the trigger, he had made the conscious decision to destroy himself as well as Tyler. So in his mind, he did kill Tyler. And since Tyler was only real in his mind, that's all that mattered.

And just for the hell of it, here are the 4 instances of single-frame shots of Tyler spliced into the movie:

I'm not sure how many of you saw this in the theatres, I did, and I thought the subliminal Tylers were much harder to see. Maybe it has something to do with film, or maybe just my first viewing. Can anyone confirm that?

I first saw the film in the theatre and I only caught the middle two subliminal Tyler instances. I remember thinking "WTF was that??" The "subliminal" penis at the end of the film was hard to miss though.

I am convinced that Rypro doesn't ever watch movies, but fast forward through them.

Hey, I didn't say you fast forward to the good parts. I said you fast forward through the entire movie.

I am also reminded to the Kill Bill thread where you also didn't seem to be clued into some of the blatently obvious things in the movie.

after swatching vol 1 again a few days ago, it is fairly obvious in that volume even.

oh and i did watch the commentary for about 30 min (was tired), and it was still hard to tell what was in the blips. maybe the transfer is a bit dark, or maybe i need to watch the movie when not tired. (oh and who ever posted the screencaps above, can you post the actual subliminal images linked)

Rypro's next question...

Spoiler:
So...was Tyler real or not? Wasn't he a soap salesman?

no, i thought that the soap making was just a cover for the narrator to make bombs.

I tend to understand movies better when I watch them rather than when I swatch them. Maybe that's your problem?

Wow, this movie has sure stayed popular-- and to think Columbine almost shelved it.

If you mean you wonder why women in general don't get it, I'm not too sure about that. My girlfriend, as well as pretty much every open-minded girl I know, thought it was a great movie. It does have that twisted love story in it, after all.

I didn't notice the tyler ones at all in the theater, but did catch the penis at the end. The tyler ones I all caught (and could tell it was him) the first time I watched it on DVD.

I'm not sure why they stand out more, maybe because it's a much smaller viewing area, where as on the theater screen you might not be focusing on the right part of the screen and the exact moments he pos up.

maybe this debate is over, but for the gun thing i see it this way:

the only way he could get tyler out of his head was to kill himself. so he meant to kill himself... but he accidently aimed to much to the left and the bullet went through his cheek instead of the back of his head/spine.

since he didn't plan to do this, in the split second he fired he assumed he was dead... so his brain erased tyler. then to his surprise he was still alive, just rid of tyler.

attempted suicides and watching buildings around you crumble is a good first date.

Wasn't really their first date...really...

The bullet bounced off of his back teeth and went through his cheek.

Jack has done what he set out to do. By shooting himself in the mouth, he has forever left the man he once was (Ikea Boy) behind, irrevokably. He is no longer the man he used to be, the man he despised.

With that, the need for his mind to continue to perpetrate the alter-ego of Tyler Durden is eliminated. He's accomplished his goal. Tyler has succeded in making him something that he's no longer ashamed of being. Tyler's now irrelevant.
