Slow down.
MEAN GIRLS had heavy promotion, and it was MTVed up quite a bit.
Let's see the second week before we start proclaiming hits around here.

Looks like again all the prognosticators (EW, BO Guru, etc) underestimated the teen girl audience again -- I kept seeing people say "Man ON Fire" would be #1 again.

Mean Girls got great reviews, I will probably see it actually. This movie is the first to help me understand how guys can justify seeing a movie just because it has a hot girl in it. Lindsey Lohan is incredible! I just don't think I can tell many of my friends I saw it and not be horribly ridiculed.

Mean Girls is similar to 2000's Bring It On as it attracts the following:
1. Girls of all ages.
2. Horny guys of all ages.
Combine the two into a good story with some great laughs and you got yourself a hit!

That's the thinking of this board, no?
And that thinking is what's slowly killing the industry.

I am surprised Envy didn't fare a tad better. I know it doesn't have the same promotional backing as the top two movies on the list but it certainly has good talent behind it. Of course, I haven't read any reviews on it so it could totally suck and I am just in the dark about it.

And studios, while they care about the opening weekend, care more about a film breaking even or making a profit. As long as they break even or make a profit, they could care less about opening weekend. I don't see Mean Girls having a huge budget (if it has more than a $25 million budget, I'll shit myself) so it'll probably take back it's budget this weekend.

Massive amount of idiots bring in the dollar for the studio, and that's all that matters, idiot.
Those mean girls can rock my boat any time, especially Tina Fey and Lindsay Lohan. Yeah baby.

Of several new films opening wide this week, Mean Girls is the only one getting positive reviews.

To support the cause, I think I'll go see the movie tonight. (guess Rivero can lump me in as an idiot. oh, the horror.)

Mean Girls took a HUGE chunk from 13 Going On 30. Looks like a 55-60% drop for it. MG looks kinda decent, but there's no way in hell I'll be caught seeing it in the theater. The DVD will be mine.
Decent hold for Denzel. Crap for the rest of the new releases.

You know, while some films take a few weeks to be a hit...most movies you can tell if they did ok or not just by seeing opening weekend. Sorry it bothers you, but it's not jumping the gun.

It's an inexpensive film, couldn't cost more than 25 million (if that), and will gross its budget back in its opening weekend. Seriously, that's all there is too it. Through is favorable reviews, and you have a film that will make 50mil domestic no problem, which means that it IS a hit for its budgetary size.
