I must be in the minority who thoroughly loved this remake; I went in expecting an extremely watered-down affair with santizied language and none of the razor-sharp with that made the original so memorable. Happily, this wasn't the case, as they really did stretch the PG-13 rating to its limit.
I'm just wondering, though, how funny this will be after two or three viewings. Surely the shock factor of 12-year-olds calling each other bitches and the like will wear off, so I'm curious how it will hold up after repeating viewings. On my way out of the theather, a Mom was pulling her waist-high young'n by his shirt collar just as fast as she could, saying repeatedly, "that was awful, just awful. Just awful, simply awful ..." I couldn't help but smile at that. |
I liked the kid actors from "Hardball" more than this group from this remake.
Seriously, the "actress" playing Amanda had like 2 expressions (either sticking out her bottom lip, or a bit of constipation), and neither were all adorable. I'm probably being too hard on her, but given how well the chemistry was between Tatum O'Neal and Walter Matthau, this remake misses most of those moments that made the original much more interesting. The kid playing Kelly was equally as bad as the one playing Amanda. I felt sorry for Greg Kinnear when he had his main scene with "Kelly", it was so bad and awkward. |
The original isn't a masterpiece but a fun 70s kids sports film. The remake captures a lot of what made that film fun. Unrated dvd anyone?
