What is the Hollywood Stock Exchange?

From the website: “Buy shares of your favorite actors and their new movies. Watch their values rise or fall based on their success. Prices soar with a blockbuster opening at the box office and plummet with a bomb no one went to see.” For those who have never played, the game is as a complicated or as easy as you want to make it (much like the real stock market).

Now, I know several of you already have HSX accounts. To keep things fair, in order to participate in the league you’ll need to start up a new account. Here’s what you need to do to join the league:

1. Go to www.hsx.com and start up a new account.

2. You can use any username you want, although if everybody used the format “DVDTalk_[DVDTalk Username]” it would make things easier to track. For example, if my DVDTalk username was "Stockbroker" my account for the league will be DVDTalk_Stockbroker.

3. When signing up, put down DVDTalk_solipsta in the "Did a friend refer you?" column. Feel free to take advantage of any of the special offers and freebies offered at this time as well.

4. After you sign up, go to “Account Information” and set your “Screen Name” to be exactly the same as your screen name here at DVDTalk. This will help avoid confusion.

5. Come back here and post your HSX user name. You need to have a new account, or I won’t add you to the league.

6. Entry into the league is always open...we welcome newcomers!

Rememeber, new players: add today's "Bottom Feeder" (DVDTalk_solipsta) as your referral when signing up!

I wanted to try some completely different tactics with a different account, so I've now got dvdtalk_swh2 in addition to my original dvdtalk_swh . If anyone feels this is unfair, don't add it to the league.

Thanks, MrN.

After adding vism and shill66's alternate port, I now show 52 players in the league.

I'm curious, for you people in the Top Ten do you tend to put a lot of money in only a few properties or do you like to spread it around a bit? I find myself investing in as many as ten films, a few actors, and the laminated list. It has taken me a while to make the paltry 60 grand of profit I have now.

I look for undervalued stocks that are not extremely long term investments and are also low priced. I try to buy at least 5,000 to 10,000 shares of those. It's of little use to be stocks that are 80-100+ H$ each share. You just cannot afford enough of them to make a really good profit. With so little money, long term investments will just prove to be more of a liability. If price were not an obstacle, I would be buying lots of Village right now.

I'm in the same boat rushmore. I like the 10 and less movie section. Hero really gave me some nice cash as well as Garden state. They will be coming out soon as well so it's not that long term with a nice bonus of being able to buy a lot of shares of it.

I spread it around - not all my positions have payed off, but most of them have. Biggest winner is still HERO and the biggest loser has to be BWDOW which I shorted and I'm not sure why its going up so much...

Tip of the week: Since most of us have little cash, and are playing openers and calls/puts, take a look at EAP - a fund that does nothing but openers/calls/puts. Even if you don't buy the fund itself, it might give you some tips on what positions to take for the next two weeks.

I currently have two ports:

Groucho (DVDTalk_Groucho): "Day Trader." This was my original port that has since been removed from the league. It's now up over H$4mil (a lot of that due to inadvertant referrals). I actively trade in it, using a lot of short-term strategies already mentioned in these threads. I also have invested a bit in AI and Survivor warrants.

Groucho Reloaded (DVDTalk_Groucho2): "College Fund." This is my port that is currently #1 on the Leaderboard. Playing it safe. Low risk, long term investments. Very little diversity: I have made a total of three trades with this account. Additionally, I haven't paid a dime in commissions.

What's your user name?

My strategy is to play the openers, play the bond adjusts, and play the delists. Occasionally, if I think there's a good short-term buy, I'll snag that for a few days, but generally, I try not to buy into anything longer term than a week.

David Hayter just got the directing gig. So like his other projects, scripting Watchmen and Iron Man (which have been in the trades), people are jumping on the bandwagon.

I have a high mix of movies, actors, and calls and shorts. Some are short term and some are long term. I also jumped on a couple of good IPO's. My secret is to pay attention to when some movies or actors will delist. There can be some good short term profit there. I rarely buy more than 1000-1500 shares at a time except for puts and calls ( 10,000 a pop) and I go with my gut.
