'Donnie Darko' to be re-released
Movie has become cult hit on video

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- "Donnie Darko," a cult drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a disturbed teenager, is getting a new theatrical release, featuring 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage.

Newmarket Films, which released the film in 2001, is unveiling a director's cut at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29. It plans to release the film theatrically in Seattle before moving into other markets later in the summer.

The new version will also have new visual effects and music.

"Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I've always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two hours," said "Darko" writer-director Richard Kelly. "With this version I feel like I've finally been able to complete the film."

"Darko" grossed just $515,545 at the domestic box office but has since gained a following on DVD, where it has grossed more than $10 million domestically. It also stars Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, James Duval and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

I think this thread should be retitled, this is pretty interesting news and I didn't realize the directors cut was a DVD release, not theatrical.

I'm wondering what the possible effects of this could be if successful? You've got to figure basically ANY money is gravy, what would the target number be here? 10 million for print and marketing costs? I could see this generating 15-20 million if the Glyenhall's were active in the marketing. But this could open a door for a whole new wave of life for some films. I'd think Boondock Saints could follow this, especially with the sequel coming soon, if Donnie Darko was able to generate some interest.

Also of note, this has been playing continous midnight fri/sat screenings in NYC since it's release.

Fantastic news, although a bit of a bummer I'll likely have to doubledip now on the DVD... But it's great this movie gets a second chance.

I've known of this for while, and have been looking forward to it. I'm not too bummed about having to buy another DVD, this film was really good, and worth another purchase especially since it's another cut.

Love the movie, but I hope the additional footage doesn't ruin it. After watching it with commentary, I realized that, well, I hate Kelly's vision of the film; it's almost like he made such a great movie by accident, heh. I'll certainly be interested in seeing the new cut, as I wonder whether it takes away any ambiguity in terms of .

I don't want to get technical, but is it really a double dip when it's a different film?

I enjoyed this film when I first saw it, and unfortunately I haven't had a chance to revisit it yet. I'll look forward to this "director's cut" b/c I kind of felt there could have been more to it as well (especially more Maggie!).

I bet it doubles its total theatrical gross. :)

I enjoyed it the first few times I watched it, then randomly found the website, and thought it was cool. I think part of the film's greatness is its ambiguity and how it doesn't explain its circular form. Once you go the website, it gets explained for you, which kind of takes away from its mystique, which I dig.

Ryo - I can't imagine watching it blazed for the first time. Several of my friends did, and understood nothing except the bunny scared the SHIT out of them, hahaha.

I dunno.. I'd be willing to give it another shot with some Old Toby.

I really wish Luca$ would stop changing his films. First Star Wars and now this. He is going to be the death of film as we know it.;)

When we play Donnie Darko at the midnight shows at the theater I work for, we have a guy in a bunny suit sit with random people at key moments during the movie.

That's better than any extra footage.

I'll hold off an see what the reviews are like, see if the additions are like before I decide to get this one. It was an interesting film, but not one I've ever felt inclined to watch a second time.

I don't see how the film can be substantially improved.

I will watch the new version but wouldn't be surprised if I prefer the old.

Agree. This kid is one terrific little actress who I suspect will be around a long time.
