As an Historian and future History Professor (i'm "dissertating" as they say), I will offer that I loved this movie...and I found it to work on all cylinders. (i really need to stop agreeing with Pants on these things :( ) Great characters, fantastic atmospher, wonderful writing, and the action, when it occurred, was just right. I actually went in with a pretty good chip on my shoulder ready to pick it apart, but I walked out very impressed. It easily was in my top 10 theater experiences last year.
But I love most historical dramas/epics/what have you.... |
Thanks brizz. Comments from a true academic.

Originally posted by Fok I thought this movie was crap as well. No point to the story and character development was non-existant. Just guys out on boats playing battleships. No point to the story? Ever hear of a guy named Bonaparte? Could have taken control of Europe if not for the Russian/Prussian/Austrian alliance, Russia's harsh winters and the British navy? Ring any bells?? If not maybe you should take a visit to your local library and read a few books. |
Originally posted by Corvin Maybe if teachers weren't generally paid dirt, some of the brighter minds would be attracted to the field. But I digress. If they wanted money then this isn't the field. I grew up with teacher parents whining about the same thing; they didn't like M & C either, but admitted they were under the wrong mindset. |

Originally posted by Corvin Yes, you have stated the obvious. The teaching profession isn't one generally associated with money. All I was saying was that if the salary was more lucrative, you'd certainly have more people attempting to get the job. I'm not quite sure what your last comment is supposed to mean, and I'm not even certain it was addressed to me. This is about Master and Commander right? This is starting to look like an "otter" thread. ;) |
I think one thing everyone can agree upon is that if you're looking for a fast paced action movie, Master and Commander will not be your cup of tea.
(I think the studio made a horrendous mistake by trying to sell it as an action movie with their first trailer.) |

I think it is unfair to reflect scott1598's movie critique, lack of spell checking, and general attitude onto
1. History Teachers 2. Secondary School Teachers 3. Teachers 4. The Education System If someone disliked Office Space and said "and I work in an office" would you attack his ENTIRE profession and his ENTIRE industry? Give me a break. The generalizations made against scott1598 in this thread towards scott1598 speak more towards a systemic problem than his original comments about the film. |
ummmmmm.....happy 4/20 everyone.

I'm also a recent college graduate. Feel free to comment on how my opinion of this movie reflects our nation's recent graduates. |

I was expecting much more of this movie. There were some good scenes especially the opening, but then it started to get a little boring because there was simply too much talking in it. I was expecting a few more battle scenes as well. The audio in this movie though is fantastic.

Maybe you should have watched it in the theater (or in a good home theater). Besides the great story, cast, set design, etc. - this film has one of the best sound tracks and the most beautiful cinematography that can be heard/seen anywhere. I was completely immersed in this movie from start to end.

Good film?....Yes.....Replay Value......Not much

Great movie imo,it was a blind buy and knew it wasnt an action movie so maybe that is the reason I enjoyed it,I love historic movies and im glad to have it in my collection.

I used to leave my books in school and therefore wouldn't do my homework. Anyway..... I watched M&C tonight. It had some nice qualities that made this film stand out from the rest. It's clearly not an action packed movie by no means, but more of a history lesson. Not in the bad way. Watching this movie you have more insight on the functionality of a working battle ship in 1800’s. This is great in its own right. This movie doesn’t have much replay value…but I’ll turn it on from time to time. |

I happened to quite enjoy this movie, but I understand why some may have found it boring. But to call it a bad movie...is short sighted. |
Originally posted by fumanstan I can't believe comments were made about the state of the nation's educational system and the quality of teachers based on a teacher saying he disliked a movie on a message board. |

I can understand that not everyone would like M&C - I liked it but didn't love it - but for the love of all that is holy, at least try to elaborate on your points. If you don't, people will think you're 'not firing on all cylinders' (the actual expression). |
