Movie Challenge Week 6: Unfamiliar Genres

What is Groucho’s Movie Challenge? Its mission is simple: let us all, as a forum, work to seek out films that might otherwise slip our radar. Each week, anybody who wants to participate will see a film within the guidelines, and return back to the forum to report on the film they saw. It’s easy, it’s fun, and everybody can participate. It’s not a trivia contest…it’s not a game…it’s merely a way we can all be exposed to new avenues of film appreciation…or at the very least see a good flick or two.

Week 6: Unfamiliar Genres

This week’s challenge was suggested all the way back in week one, and it’s the easiest challenge yet. Watch a film in an unfamiliar genre. This can be a genre you hate, or just one that you usually don’t see movies in.

Only one other guideline:

1. It should be a film you have never seen before.

Just to help get the ball rolling here are some genre ideas. Remember that sub-genres can count too:

Action
Horror
Romance
Drama
Comedy
Sci-Fi
Mystery
Sports
Fantasy

Watch your film whenever you have the time, and come back here to report…whether your experience was positive or negative.

Missed a previous version of the Movie Challenge? It’s never to late to play:

Week 1: Old Movie Week
Week 2: Foreign Film Week
Week 3: Silence is Golden
Week 4: The Truth is Stranger
Week 5: IMDB Top 250

This is going to be tough, since I like pretty much all genres. I suppose I could watch my wife's copy of Steel Magnolias.

Hmm, I guess I can use Silence of the Lambs or Dead Ringers (got them because they were OOP) or maybe the discs in the Claude Chabrol Collection... The only one I have seen out of it is La Décade prodigieuse.

This is tough because I watch all kinds of movies, but I think I've only seen one one foreign language musical before and that would be The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Now the problem is finding another foreign language musical.

I think Young Girls of Rochefort would be the logical follow-up.

I've gotta go with Umbrellas of Cherbourg for this one. I just got my copy in the mail. I can't say I've ever watched a foreign language musical/opera. I also usually stay away from romance movies too so this one should work on many levels for this challenge.

I picked modern horror as my unfamiliar genre, and the film was Santa sangre. This turned out to be a good choice for me as Jodorowsky is a genius at the surreal & mysterious; and I like that kind of thing.

I was going to go with Comedy, but when I clicked the Comedy link on Netflix I noticed I had seen about half the movies that came up on the first page they gave me. I guess i've seen more comedies than I thought. My second choice was drama and one of the movies that was listed was Schindler's List which I had netflix ship to me for last week's challenge, but it still hasn't got here so I haven't seen it yet. Hopefully the postal worker that borrowed it gets done with it soon so I can watch it sometime this week.

I'm falling behind here (by two weeks) but if I get the chance a Western is in the cards for me.

New plan for me -- I told my wife about this challenge and she decided that she wanted us to continue doing the challenge together. The problem is, between the two of us, we watch pretty much every genre there is. Then my wife decided there was one genre neither she nor I watches: porn. Therefore, she said, we'll have to rent some porn and watch it together.

One of the many, many reasons I love my wife!

Unfortunately, porn is not an option for me, so I'll be out pounding the back alleys looking for snuff films.

Genres I don't ever watch:

Industrial films
Educational films
Gay porn
Infomercials
Sports games on DVD

This is going to be a tough one.

We have a few at work to show to potential customers. They show how our facility works, how good our processes are, how tight our controls are, and why you should risk millions of dollars on us by having us do your manufacturing.

You could watch some of the old educational films that came in the Educational Archives set...

Also, I think there is a site with public domain films available for download, and if I recall, it has tons of the old educational films, etc.

Seriously, guys. No need to go overboard. Even if you like all genres, pick one that you haven't watch a film from for a while.
