Matrix Revolutions: Does it suck as much as I've heard?
 

I love the original Matrix, but was sorely disappointed with the sequel, so much so that I skipped Revolutions when it was in theatres. So I have no idea how the trilogy ends. But I've heard a few mixed reviews of this movie and I wonder if I even want to see it, or if I just want to remember the original without the other two. Does this movie bring the story full circle and give the trilogy a worthwhile send-off, or should I stay away?

You'll get such a wide array of responses to this that I wonder if it's worth even posing the question, but if it helps, here are some thing that may help you decide. Keep in mind that I didn't particularly like the film (or <b>Reloaded</b>) due to its amateurish philosophy and the arrogant belief that the audience would mistake vagueness for brilliance ... but I did not hate it either. All in all, I'd say I largely agree with Aaron's review. Anyway, stuff to consider:

1) The story is concluded. There is a definite resolution to the major plot threads, and personally I thought it was a pretty good concept.
2) The movie is incredibly full of itself. Whether you find the philosophy to be brilliant or barely above a freshman course in college, there's no denying the Wachowski siblings think they're the shit, and they want you to think so too.
3) It is very special effects intensive, with some very cool sequences, but I don't think there's anything better than the freeway chase from <b>Reloaded</b>.
4) You can't turn your brain off. While there are a lot of red herrings and seemingly pointless sequences/characters, just as much of it has valid meaning to the overall story, and if you don't pay attention, you'll possibly miss the point.
5) IMO, there was no need for a trilogy. There's really only enough story to fill one sequel. Some of it is in <b>Reloaded</b>, the rest is here, all stretched out by crazy action sequences.

Overall, it's my opinion that this is far from a brilliant film and equally far from a terrible film. I liken it in a way to <b>A.I.</b>, another somewhat controversial film: whether you end up loving or hating it, you really need to see for yourself. It's too unique to simply be dismissed. I wouldn't give too much attention to what the rest of us thought (including me), because the spectrum of response would be near incomprehensible. You're 2/3 through the story; you owe it to yourself to see the rest and judge for yourself whether its a worthwhile conclusion.

I doubt you'll think it sucks as much as you've probably heard, but much of the criticism has merit. Still, I'd say you should check out the DVD.

I too disliked everything about Reloaded except for the chase sequence, but I foolishly hoped for the best in the final installment and came away realizing, "Yeah, it CAN get worse." I really loved the first one.

its an excellent piece of sci-fi...has is the entire Trilogy...keep an open mind and pay attention...

The first reply to this thread is the one you should listen to. It's a very well-written reply, and the review in the link is also well-done. I think you have to make up your own mind by seeing it for youself.

As for my opinion, I just got my hands on an advanced copy of the DVD, and after rewatching it again, I realize I still enjoy it after multiple viewings. However, one thing I noticed is that the only parts of the film that I perked up in were the action scenes inside the Matrix. The special effects are amazing, and better than anything in the previous two films. No crappy CGI here. However, I agree with the others that nothing tops the car chase from Reloaded.

I like (and will buy) all three films, but I know that the sequels could have been a lot better, and that I had to lower my expectations in order to enjoy them.

I still think the Neo vs. Smith rain-drenched final battle is incredibly satisfying. Visually stunning, and funny too. It's the best part of the movie, and probably the only part I think nearly all of us can agree was worth watching.

I think its worth it. Decent movie. There could have been a lot of Matrix movies but not with the story that Reloaded and Revolutions had. There was only enough story for ope movie with those two.

The best part IMO is seeing a bunch of those stupid ravers getting blown away flying squids.

i will agree that the battle for zion looks fn amazing. this is also coming from the same idiot who can't tell the cgi in the burly braw from reloaded, when everyone else thinks its obvious. i need proof on that.

Add this 3rd part to the of Bad part 3's like GODFATHER 3, SUPERMAN 3, SMOKEY & BANDIT 3.

It was not that bad of a movie. As a previous poster stated they probably could have combined part 2 and 3 together. The battle scene in Revolutions is amazing, cg or not. To anyone who has seen it, who would want that job of ammo runner ;)

It depends on what you are looking for...if you want some fantastisc special effects and a few epic battle scenes, you'll get your money's worth. If you're looking for a pay-off for everything that was set up in the previous two movies, you're going to be disappointed.

I own the first two movies (I actually liked RELOADED), but won't be buying the third.

As has already been noted, you'll get a LOT of different opinions on this movie. Personally I loved it, and thought it was an excellent ending to the trilogy. I did have some issues with it thought (mainly, a few plot points weren't explained as clearly as they could have been). I liked Reloaded a lot too, but Revolutions was much better.

i'd like some explimations. what "setup" was in the first 2 movies, wasn't explained in revolutions? (specifics and spoiler tags please.)

Reloaded sucked. Revolutions did not.

Reloaded left me a little bumed, revolutions left me denying the existance of both.

I really enjoyed Reloaded (my expectations were low, most of my friends thought it sucked) but I'll have to give Revolutions another try (sober this time) to really enjoy it.

I'm only buying it just to own the whole trilogy...but I doubt I'll watch it more than once...

While Reloaded had some outright bad scenes (the rave, obviously), I think it was a film with many excellent action sequences and much promise for the next film, promise that Revolutions did not deliver.

For action, Revolutions easily has moments that equal either of the other two films. However, from a story point of view, the film is a bitter disappointment. The ideas set up in the first two films are squandered uselessly, as the Wachowskis decide to end everything with action sequences instead of exploring the ramifications of the things they set up in Reloaded.

I really wish I hadn't seen Revolutions, because it left such an unsatisfying taste in my mouth. To know that such a promising series could go so wrong makes me sad.

So, my suggestion is not to even see it. Just imagine how it could end after Reloaded and go with that. It's bound to be far more interesting and satisfying than what's in Revolutions.

I saw it 5 times on IMAX, so I guess I liked it well enough.

This was almost my exact feelings after seeing Revolutions. I'm going to watch it again to see if I enjoy any more knowing the events & outcome.

revolutions was a bad way to end the trilogy... I wish they would have just left it at the first movie.

I was someone who actually liked Reloaded and Revolutions. I thought they were both well done movies that kept me entertained.

I did not change my life while watching them ;however, I did enjoy myself.

I feel that they are bashed far more than they deserve. The first Matrix movie was very original. The next two movies were never going to capture that same magic feeling.
