best part 1 of a trilogy?

There should really be only 3 choices here:
Back to the Future
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Matrix
All 3 did not have another movie in the trilogy better in many people's opinions.
Blue would be the only other one, although I wonder how many people have actually seen these movies.

Clicked on the thread with the intention of selecting Star Wars: A New Hope, but went with The Matrix. Both films were ground breaking, but in many ways The Empire Strikes Back was better than the first film, whereas The Matrix trilogy dropped off quite a bit with the remaining films. (IMHO of course)
Lastly, it came down to what I would reccomend. I would tell anyone who hasn't seen the Star Wars trilogy (yeah...like who?) to see them all. I'd tell some folks to just watch the first of the Matrix trilogy.

I have to say that I am really surprised at how many picks have been made over The Godfather. Not syaing that people don't have the right to do so, I just didn't expect to see it in such numbers.
Also, it sounds like some people maybe voting on impact instead of quality. Was that the intention or does the OP care either way?

Nonetheless, I'll lodge my vote with Raiders of the Lost Ark. There's just nuttin wrong with that movie. It kicks ass.
And to this day...I still don't see why The Matrix is so great. Damn fine action film, set some trends, I just wish I could see why it's heralded heads and tails above its sequels. I always thought it had the same flat acting and goofy dramatics that the sequels did, just better pacing. I like the movie, I just want some enlightenment...

my instinctive answer on reading the thread's title .. Blue - Three Colours
.. although I can whole-heartedly relate to this ..
.. but of the big-budget movies, I'd say that Matrix is the best 1st part of a trilogy.
