No question - The Hunt for Red October. Though I think Harrison Ford is a great actor, I never liked his portrayal of Jack Ryan. Alec Baldwin played it perfectly. Plus I think the story was the strongest of any of the films.

I too voted for Clear and Present Danger - not sure why exactly it's just the movie that I found the most entertaining.

HFRO. It's just the one that I like the best. The performances, the tension, Connery and Neill's interaction, Curry's russian accent, and I'm a sucker for submarine stories.

Exactly. The Hunt for Red October the most accurate to the book, not only storywise, but also for the characters. Harrison Ford's portrayal of Jack Ryan was too 100% goody-goody. Alec Baldwin, while not perfect, was much better and will always be Jack Ryan.

Clear and Present Danger for many reasons. It was one of the only Clancy books I made it through and liked alot. I thought it was fairly faithful to the book.

Though I liked them all (yes, even The Sum of all Fears), my vote goes for The Hunt for Red October. Very intense and all round the coolest interpretation of a Clancy novel.

Having Willem Dafoe play John Clark soured me on "CAPD".

I also liked HFRO the best, though I did like Patriot Games until the end.

I like and remember Hunt for Red October the best. I've seen other movies but can vaguely recall the plot of those movies.

I love CAPD. Just love that scene where the solider is asking whose fault it is (that his fellow soliders were killed) and Ryan (Ford) says "It's my fault".

Not really...in the book, you're always wondering if Ramius is a madman or is really defecting. In the movie, I don't think you ever doubt his sanity.

I didn't say it was exact, but it is much closer overall than some of the others. Clear and Present Danger had a number of noticable changes, as did Patriot Games (although its fairly close, I just think its one of Clancy's weaker books), and let's not even touch how The Sum of All Fears desecrated the book (although it makes for a great commentary with Clancy on the dvd ripping the film to pieces).

I have to go with Clear and Present Danger on this one, a movie I've defended for a long long time and will continue to do so whenever the topic turns to Clancy adaptations. It really is an underrated film and I wish more people would give it a second chance. It seems funny calling a movie this talky, cerebral and convoluted fun but there you go, I always find it more entertaining and fun to watch than other military thrillers like Hunt and the childish Air Force One.

Sure, the villains are Hollywood cliche to the core(all half-dozen of them), the movie's Clark is odd(Russell Crowe would be a much more faithful choice) and Ford's Ryan is a bit too high and mighty at times, but in the end I still find it to be a terrific mix of Hollywood thrills and competent, snappy writing.

And as shallow as it may sound, it just has some really "cool" scenes: the mouse-and-mouse keyboard race on the computers, the laser-guided missile, the expertly-staged SUV ambush in Bogota, etc.(a scene that was actually for a time shown to real CIA operatives in D.C. to inform of procedures during such an attack).

Then there's the scene where Ryan confronts the President, a man of power who willingly sends troops to battle because of a personal vendetta against those responsible for his friend's death. Ford's acting in this scene is terrific: he conveys frustration, sadness and raw fury, barely restrained by respect for the office, as he squares off against the most powerful man in the world. He really looks as if he wants to deck the man. But in the end he leaves with his dignity intact, which is the underlying moral of the story: that doing the right thing is ultimately dignifying.

Cheesy? Sure, but imo it works. CAPD for me.

CAPD, by far.

The film is well acted, a good story and intelligent. Patriot Games just seemed tired out of the gate. HFRO would be my second choice. Sum was Dum. No matter how many times I hit myself with a hammer, I just can't buy Affleck in that role.

Ooooh, I hate when that happens!

Hunt for Red October

Great Cast and the movie was the most faithful of the bunch to the book.

Clear and Present Danger - Ford's confrontation with the President at the end is riveting: Sorry Sir, I don't dance.

HFRO without question. It's by far the best film of the franchise and I've always thought Alex Baldwin must weep at night after decided not to reprise the role. Aside from his recent Oscar nomination for "The Cooler", his career trajectory went straight downhill after refusing to commit to subsequent Ryan roles.

I would rate them in order of release:

1. The Hunt for Red October
2. Patriot Games
3. Clear & Present Danger
4. Sum of All Fears

The Hunt for Red October is in a class of it's own and Mr. Baldwin was the best Jack Ryan.

Hunt for Red October. I 've always thought that Baldwin did a great job as Ryan. Of course having Sean Connery in a role put it up points. Clear and Present Danger is number two on the list. Ford does great but still like Baldwin.
