I'm not sure if this 1998 interview from the New York Times Magazine is what I was thinking of, but in it Penn makes this comment:
"Nic Cage is no longer an actor;" he says. "He could be again, but now he's more like a . . . performer."
If that was his opinion ten years ago, imagine how Penn feels about Cage these days!

i think the weird receding hairline he's got going on is more of a trademark for him.

The only film I honestly like him in is Adaptation...well not him..but his acting. Spike Jonze rocks....

Re: The Nicolas Cage Outburst

For every The Weather Man, Adaptation, Matchstick Men, and Leaving Las Vegas; we get Knowing, Bangkok Dangerous, National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Next, Ghost Rider, World Trade Center, The Wicker Man, Windtalkers, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and Gone in Sixty Seconds (for starters).

It boggles my mind that the man has acted in some great films, but also has acted in a good chunk of the shittiest films this decade has brought us.

My friends and I like to have a drinking game to Nic Cage movies where you take a drink every time Cage makes a stupid face. Everyone ends up drunk about an hour in.

Wouldn't suprise me... Penn should take a page from Cage and lighten up a bit...

In terms of the talking calmly and then OUTBURST thing, they just did a bit about this on SNL a couple weeks ago. Only the actor in that skit was John Malkovich.

Because the Three Stooges are serious cinematic business.

Based on the thread title, I thought that Cage had "went Bale-astic" or something. I'm copyrighting the previous phrase, btw

Not really. Mann and Pacino had envisioned Pacino's character as mild coke user. That's why he had the ocassional outbursts and erratic behaviour.

Re: The Nicolas Cage Outburst

The Wicker Man remake is a hilariously perfect example of his raging outbursts. Plus you get to see him running around in a bear suit.

Al Pacino has played a lot of closet cokeheads over the last two decades then.

Actually that's half true...Yes, they envisioned him as a coke user of sorts but that take was totally improvised...Hank Azaria's reaction is real..he didn't know how to react to that.

Also about The Rock...I like the cool action scene in the shower room..and any scene with Ed Harris. Cage sucks throughout...hate his character.

I've never liked Nick Cage. He really isn't that great or even good of an actor.

Re: The Nicolas Cage Outburst

Fuck...I never got to see Bringing Out The Dead...seems like the DVD was discontinued..hrm..wonder if there will be a new and better one? Though..it is $5.83 + $2.98 shipping from a seller on Amazon...so that's a good deal for the flick too. Any special features on the DVD?

grrrr...hurm...what are the chances of this film getting a rerelease on DVD? It's not a big Scorsese film for sure...so I dunno. Guess $9 is a good deal for that...eh..it's mine now.

Re: The Nicolas Cage Outburst

Cage has done more crap obviously. But I think his career stacks up pretty well against Sean Penn's. I started a thread on that very subject years ago.
