army of darkness

im about to get the boomstick edition blind and want to know is there any part i should see first before i get it.Or its ok to see this first. Is there a prequel for this movie or sumthing.

djtoell 03-05-03 12:48 AM

Army of Darkness is the third part in a trilogy that began with Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. Seeing the previous parts isn't absolutely necessary, as you'll probably be able to understand everything, since there is a prologue at the start of AOD that explains briefly what has come before. However, to truly appreciate much of it, you should probably see the first two films beforehand.

I would suggest seeing the first two flicks even though you will notice that they all seem very different. first is pretty graphic (tree's + Women = Woah).

Second is a bit more slap stick

Army of darkness is all fun.

edytwinky 03-05-03 01:16 AM

You have to watch the first two to fully enjoy the humor and action of what we call "Army of Darkness".

the narrator 03-05-03 01:34 AM

definately watch the first couple before AOD

Panda Phil 03-05-03 10:17 AM

Actually you could skip the first one entirely if you want and not miss anything. Evil Dead 2 is practically a remake of one with a bigger budget and more humor.

joeydaninja 03-05-03 11:05 AM

you don't have to watch the first two.

yecul 03-05-03 11:27 AM

Agreed Panda. Check out part 2 and then AoD.

Evil Dead 1 = straight up horror/gore film.

Evil Dead 2 = slapstick horror/gore film.

Army of Darkness = slapstick/slapstick film.

I saw part 3, then 1, then 2. Didn't mess with the plot or anything, but I'd have preferred to see 2 and then 3 (or 1, 2, 3...)

MasterofDVD 03-05-03 12:34 PM

I think if you see the first two you will certainly be happier with your purchase of AOD. ED & ED2 are some odd films and not something every movie watcher will enjoy. AOD is an oddball to but I think the average person would tolerate it more than the previous two films.

I own numerous versions of al 3 films and enjot AOD the most. It used to be my favorite movie of all time but I've since found other picks. I certainly hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I first saw it.

bralph 03-05-03 01:20 PM

I saw them completely backwards (that is AOD, Evil Dead II, then Evil Dead) and had no problems whatsoever. By all means watch the other two, but the order doesn't matter much.

Dr. DVD 03-05-03 01:49 PM

I saw AOD first then EDII later down the road. IMO, you don't need to see anything before AOD as it seems to pretty much be its own animal. Unless your like me and just can't get enough of the hammy genius that is Bruce Campbell! :D

WiccanPagan 03-05-03 03:40 PM

i watched em backwards, somewhat disappointing as when i got to 1 it was nothing like i would expect. the order doesn't matter enough to make a difference. watch aod if you feel the need or hit the 2 eds first. your perogative.

Trigger 03-05-03 07:08 PM

I would see ED2 first... then I'd see Army of Darkness. If you feel like you're a fan, then go back and see ED1. ED2 isn't really a sequel to ED... nor is it a remake.

Simpson Purist 03-05-03 07:55 PM

Definitely watch the first two Evil Dead films, you'll be glad you did. Plus, each film connects with each other in a way.

for Evil Dead (by far my favorite of the three, so I agree with those who said you should see both before seeing Army of Darkness), get one of these:

Elite release: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd (this was the definitive release before the most recent Anchor Bay releases came out. this version is fullscreen. there is some debate as to which this film should be seen in fullscreen or widescreen...you might be able to find some threads on it if you do a search)

Anchor Bay (most recent release):
either: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd (if you want the cool packaging and a few more special features, widescreen version)

or: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd (regular keepcase and less special features, also widescreen version)

for Evil Dead 2:
get this version: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd

or if you want, there is a limited edition tin version of the same disc that is hard to find anymore but is cool if you like special packaging: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...v=glance&s=dvd

for Army of Darkness I would say just go ahead and get this new boomstick edition as you had planned since it is the same two discs that AB has released and released and rerereleased a few times already.

When I saw Bruce Campbell a few years ago he told the audience if they haven't seen the Evil Dead movies to watch them in reverse order.

Can I watch the Evil Dead movies out of order?

I was thinking of picking up AOD, since I catch bits and pieces of it on AMC. I haven't seen ED or ED2 (so please don't spoil it for me). Can I watch them out of order or will I be confused and will it spoil the first two? Thanks.

Groucho 03-15-04 03:30 PM

It's best to watch them in order, but you won't get confused if you don't. Each installment begins with a summary of the previous film(s).

BlackBeauty92 03-15-04 04:23 PM

to be honest...
i think you need to watch the 2 & 3 (Army of Darkness) in order...
cause they're related/continuing story

the 1st is more like independent... the 2nd is more like the "re-make" of the 1st

but...

you can always watch all 3 in order just for the heck of it :D

just my take on the subject

jaeufraser 03-15-04 04:25 PM

As said before, each film recaps the other first. But, truthfully, it's nice to see the progression of films from one to the next. But in all honesty I started with AOD and worked my way back too.

Jackskeleton 03-15-04 04:42 PM

NO, YOU CAN'T JOSH! you didn't complete all your homework. Now go to your room at once!

You "CAN" do whatever you want. ;)

Venom 03-15-04 05:03 PM

i'd reccomend watching them in order, or at the very least watching ED before you watch ED2. because ED2 is way better then ED.

chente 03-15-04 05:15 PM

Watch the Evil Dead movies out of order? That's like wiping your ass before you crap.
