The best Spielberg movie poll *revised*
Ok, lets try my poorly worded poll again -
Consider for a moment the career of Mr Spielberg. The Spielberg of the 70's and early 80's was a unstoppable behemoth of movie making. His back-to back home runs* - Jaws, CE3K, Raiders, ET - is a streak any director would love to have.
But then, somewhere around the time he got the oscar, Steven lost the touch. Somehow some of the movie making magic went out of his soul - sure AI and Minority Report were OK films, but they weren't the solid 'out of the park' home runs of his early career.
When did Steven Spielberg's string of home runs end? Did it ever end? Did he ever have one to begin with?
* again, 1941 not withstanding.

And then we started discussing all the other great Spielberg flicks - Raiders, ET, CE3K and so on - how even the ones we didn't like (ET, for example) were still really good rock solid movies.
Then the list came to an end 'round about the time Jurassic Park and Schindler's List came up. The conclusion? That although the Oscar brought respectability and recognition, it also took away some of his 'magic'. That movies like AI and Minority Report were OK, they were completely 0pned by Raiders and it's kin.
So - at what point did Steven jump the shark (um, so to speak)? Did he ever?

Frankly, I don't know what the hell you're talking about.
He's had duds sprinkled throughout his career, from 1941 to Hook to Always, but the fact of the matter is that since winning the Oscar in 1993 he's made great films, particularly his last 3 (A.I., Minority Report, and Catch Me If You Can). A.I. is a masterpiece and easily one of his 5 best films; Catch Me... explores Spielberg's principal themes and has as much heart as his early masterpieces.
In many ways he's a better filmmaker now than he was 25 years ago. The guy is in a new renaisance and I hope he keeps it up.

Last really great movie: Schindler's List (I liked Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can, but they were good not great).
When did his streak end? He never really had one (unless 2 in a row is a streak). Duel was great, I've never seen his next two (Savage, Something Evil--both TV movies but so was Duel) and I don't like Sugarland Express (although it's fairly highly rated). Next, Jaws was excellent, 1941 not so good, ROTL and ET were excellent, Twilight Zone and Temple of Doom not so great (some sequences of TZ were really good, but his, Kick the Can, was one of the weak ones IMHO), and so on.
So, I guess his streak ended with ET (or maybe Poltergeist if that counts).

Err... Ummm... Where's the poll choice for Jaws?
The answer is still Jaws and the question is this thread > http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=303719
Edit - Oooohh... I see! You mean the last good Spielberg film, not his best... Dah... In that case, it's Schindler's List... The rest are all mediocre at best...

IMHO Speilberg has become more of an intelligent director who tries to add a little bit of a moral or a meaning to his newer films. Lets face it Jaws, Indy, E.T., were mostly fun popcorn fair with a light sprinkling of a secondary meaning(love of family, friendship, right vs. wrong, etc). His newer films are heavier stuff that isn't really made for Saturday afternoon with the family(effects of war, mortality, debate over morality of AI, etc).

Again, I submit that Spielberg is at his best when he's directing action. I have yet to see a film he's done that focuses on human emotion or "the wonderful world of children" without failing completely, and that includes Schinder's List.
Edit: That's not entirely true. I enjoyed Catch Me If You Can. It was light fun.
So, yeah, where's the option to vote for Jaws?
