Secret Window thoughts

I searched and didn't find a thread about how the movie was, so I'll give my $0.02.

In short, not worth spending money on it to see it at the theater. The story felt like I have seen it multiple times before because it is a lot like
Spoiler:
Fight Club. Mort realizes around 2/3 of the way through the movie he is crazy and starts to talking to halucinations of himself... instead of talking to halucinations of Brad Pitt.

The movie just needed to be more creepier.
Spoiler:
What it needed was more 'insane' parts throughout the movie making him seem more crazy than we were lead to believe.
There was almost a sense of comedy going throughout with the way Johnny Depp was acting. I guess I was alot more disappointed than I thought I would be. Oh well, Eternal Sunshine is tonight, and I'm hoping that'll be much better. :)

Anyone else see this?

Darkfriend 03-10-04 08:31 AM

Haven't seen it yet, will probably rent it out of curiosity...

In the preview I couldn't help but laugh at John Turturro with his amish hat saying "You stole ma story " ...

Would have been scarier if it would have been Jesus Quintana!!!

"Hey!! You stole my mother/$%*ing story!!! Nobody f**ks with The Jesus!!!"

Spoiler:
I enjoyed secret window, but the clues that he was Shooter were there from the get go. How did he follow him down, how did he pretty much know everything he was doing, car being turned on with his keys. It was fairly obvious that it was going to be another one of those flicks but I still enjoyed it.
Depp does do a good job on screen and for that I would recommand to pay to see the flick.

Looks like Misery crossed with Kingpin. I'll see Spartan instead and catch this on DVD.

scott shelton 03-10-04 09:19 AM

A paper-thin short story stretched to a long 95 minutes. Outside of Koepp's obsessive Hitchcock tributes, I found it to be a very dull movie.

Everybody should choose to see SPARTAN this weekend.

Spoiler:
You know, I was happy with how it ended. Him killing the ex wife and her new guy. Seems like an evil thing to think of, but I sorta thought "cool". I do feel bad for the dog though

Yeah I thought the same as well.
Spoiler:
At least the cops didn't show up right when he was going to kill them. That would've made it a REALLY bad movie.

Why is it that Johnny depp movies where he wears glasses considered bad? :(

Groucho 03-11-04 07:23 AM

Why aren't they playing up the Stephen King connection in the advertising? It's not mentioned at all.

Hey, I liked The 9th Gate. ;)

This movie, however, looks like a B-movie gone bad. The only redeeming quality is Depp for me. I may or may not check it out.

because this wasn't stolen from a Lars von Trier story. ;)

Probably because the last few King-based movies have been terrible.

The Antipodean 03-11-04 01:15 PM

And this is one of King's more terrible stories (IMHO), so I'm not really expecting this one to be that good either. Depp can make most things interesting (see: Once Upon A Time in Mexico), but I can't see this movie being all that.

Catch 21 03-12-04 04:28 AM

I love the ending.
Spoiler:
Bitch.

Geofferson 03-12-04 10:55 AM

Ebert's 3-star review here.

I am planning to see Secret Window tonight. Depp normally gives a pretty quality performance, in my opinion.

And he does in this movie. You won't disappointed.

Jackskeleton 03-12-04 06:52 PM

yeah, his performance is great, but the issue at hand is the story. The story here is a little lacking. Hell, depp did a great job in the Ninth Gate but, my god, the movie sucked.

necros 03-12-04 09:17 PM

I liked it. I dunno if I'll buy the DVD though. Depp was awesome though.

Spoiler:
Even before going in the theater I knew what the "twist" was gonna be, and when I saw they both smoked the same cigarettes i knew it all. What bugged me is on the way out the teenyboppers were saying how it coppied fight club. Guess that's how it'll be viewed by everyone, even though the story was writting long before fight club was, or at least that's what my buddy said. I did like the ending though, it's rare that you see the "bad guy" get away, but then I'd say his wife and her guy were the bad guys. Next time don't cheat!

Tony Dvdfan 03-12-04 09:39 PM

I guess im in the minority as i really liked this movie. I was surprised when i saw Stephen King's name on it, had no idea that it was one of his stories. Anyhow, i would recommend those who havent seen it to go see it, because Depp gave another terrific performance, and i enjoyed the story as well.

Jackskeleton 03-12-04 09:54 PM

You know, the whole "who's the bad guy" question comes up. We really didn't see much of how the ex wife was the bad guy/girl? till the final few moments. yes, she cheated on him in the beginning, but it seemed like her calls were of concern or mixed feelings instead of just trying to get him to sign the devorce papers already. Not till the final few moments do we have much idea that it was all a shame. Perhaps they should have painted her more as the bad guy.

as for the fight club reference. I'm sure any group will in the future see the whole "they are the same person" type of film as a knock off of fight club. oh well. both are good films.

Cornelius1047 03-12-04 11:58 PM

I certainly wouldn't go as far as to say both are good films, but I pretty much had the ending to this movie figured out from the start of it. Well, the first "twist" anyway. The second one came while watching it. There are very few Johnny Depp movies I think outright suck. This might be one of them. It seemed like an interesting concept, with minimal payoff. I liked Stir Of Echoes, so maybe the problem lies with Stephen King's story, though I like a lot of his stuff as well. Hard to say. Depp was good in it though. As always.

Also, as soon as the first "twist" came, I also thought of Fight Club. The difference? Fight Club worked for me, cuz 1) I didn't see it coming (it never presented itself as a mystery) and 2) the whole damn movie is brilliant. This one, not so much.

This coming from a man named Cornelius is like me saying Nightmare before christmas was a good flick. ;)

Cornelius1047 03-13-04 04:27 AM

Well, Nightmare was a good flick, but it's kinda weird, cuz I've used the alias Cornelius since before I even saw the movie. Then when it came out, it just kinda fell into place, so to speak...

Stating Depp always gives a great performance is like saying the sky is blue. Duh? The man can act.
I like D. Keopp. But this film is decent, but something feels a bit lacking/unsatisfying. Maybe it with King's story. He has a problem with deja vu. But it was an entertaing little film and I think it is one of the better King films in a while.
