I spit on your grave, is the rape graphic?

I decided to buy the movie 100% blind, and all i know is that a woman, after being raped, goes on revenge and kills her attackers. (i was buying 2 things from dvdempire.com's 2 for 15 on mgm titles and needed a 3rd title for free shipping.) I thought the rape in clockwork orange sickening and deplorable, but the rape in Ichi the Killer, i didn't find disturbing. (many reviewers have said the rapes in that movie is worse then irreversable, which i haven't seen)

this movie is genius if you ask me...but Im probably in the minority...the rape lasts for 25min. and is quite graphic and the actress has a scream that sent a chill down my spine...again if you can stomach I find it very satisfactory movie...

Bear in mind, this person did like Star Wars: the Phantom Menace, so take the opinion with a grain of salt...

and in my mind, the term "graphic" means penetration, and the works.

Yes, it's very long, and it's hard to watch but it's not "graphic" in the sense that Rypro525 mentionned, you don't see any penetration (it's the 70's after all). The length and real time feel is what makes that scene disturbing. She gets raped in 3 different locations, i.e. they rape her, they let her run away, play cat and mouse, catch her, rape her again, etc...

Of course the best thing about that DVD is the Joe Bob Briggs commentary. Absolutely hilarious. But even Joe Bob mumbles and runs out of stuff to say during the rape scene.

Just to clear things up on the rape...

It's not 25 straight minutes of rape (That would be a bit too much to handle) Instead there's a lengthy "break" between each rapist who attacks her. But being pulled back into the rape once you think it's over makes the sequence much stronger and difficult, IMO.

and in my mind, the term "graphic" means penetration, and the works.
Nope. None of that is shown.

And don't forget to check out the Joe Bob commentary!

There is nudity but no hardcore footage in the rape scenes. (I don't think that such a thing could even be legally shown in the US these days).

This is a good movie, I find it to be better than a lot of the Sexploitation films that I own.

It's quite graphic, though being a guy you will probably find the penis chopping scene more disturbing.

The second rape is mildly funny only in that it looks so fake. Although Camille does scream convincingly, the way this guy thrusts and jerks around like he's going into a seizure made me laugh. It made me realize it was only a movie, which was needed at that point.

I actually felt bad when she killed the retarded guy, because it really seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. Still, after what she goes through, I guess all of them were equally at fault in her mind.

I agree with everyone who said to get the Millenium Edition with the Joe Bob commentary. The director's commentary is also mildly entertaining because Meir Zarchi has a really strong French accent and seems to be reading his commentary from a script. He does try to explain his reasons for making the film, and after hearing his story I didn't see the film as the cheap exploitation flick I had thought it was. Sure, it's excessively violent, but so it's not like the idiots rape her and get away with it. The only difference in this film and, say, The Accused, is that the victim gets her own revenge instead of relying on the often corrupt justice system.

Oh, I'm surely familiar with porn.

I meant that it it would be very unlikely for hardcore porn to have a brutal rape theme these days in the US, as there would be a risk of prosecution.

Yeah, those Avon films were charming little movies, weren't they? You won't see those kind of films made these days.

Bad French '"art" films are exempt from obscenity laws.

(but seriously, the fact that it wasn't an actual porn film, produced for the sole purpose of sexual stimulation, might have something to do with it)

I felt bad for him too; he was harmless until egged on by his yokel "friends", who were really just using him as entertainment. I'm surprised Keaton's character killed him given that she was witness to the retarded guy's treatment of browbeating and ridicule from the other three.

As everyone has pointed out, this is definitely no porno. There is rampant nudity (Keaton spends most of movie completely nude), but the sex is simulated. I don't even remember there being any male full-frontal, although there's plenty of side and rear thrusting.

Ebert (and the deceased Siskel) often called this the worst film ever made, which I don't understand. I don't care for the film because I find it underwhelming as a supposedly disturbing psychodrama, but I've seen much, much worse. The quality of the filmmaking is at least competent, and I disagree with the accusation of misogyny: The men are all one-dimensionally horny and cretinous; the woman is an intelligent writer who is triumphant at the end. If anything it's a feminist parable.

The realism, heightened by the shaky camera work and lack of a soundtrack, also made the rape and violence that much more disturbing.
