I think 300 million is with in reason for this.
Domestically? No chance.

raven56706 02-26-04 08:02 AM

if they expand it more.... maybe......

I cant wait.... i am not expecting anything but what i read.

Gibson has already stated plans for the profit he makes off this film. He has hinted at other religious movies based on Bible characters.

One thing's for sure. If this movie makes over 300 million (which it will probably do), it will open the door for a lot of Christian films. After all, what is Hollywood's primary love (not its secular agenda) MONEY! Hollywood will follow the money.

Remember, C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) comes out next summer. I'd say "This Present Darkness" will soon follow.

Groucho 02-26-04 08:33 AM

I think you guys are being overly optimistic if you think this will make over $300 million domestically. As stated in another thread, I think this will make between $100 million and $200 million. Which is still a great take for a modestly-budgeted movie.

This movie cannot possibly make even close to what Spiderman or Harry Potter or any blockbuster film of that status has made in its opening - it's just not mathematically possible. It will be playing on about HALF the number of screens of those films, and thus, even if every single seat sold out for every single show, it still could not come close.

It will probably have a higher PER SCREEN average than many of those films, however.

And as for "the money" - I don't think it's a big deal, since it was especially not the motive to get this movie made. A year ago everybody was talking about how this movie wouldn't make ANYTHING because Gibson shot it in two dead languages - he even wanted to show the film WITHOUT SUBTITLES if you'll remember. Not the sign of somebody "out to make a buck" by any means.

That he IS is just a happy circumstance, in my opinion. He put his entire self into this film, quite obviously. It's an amazing piece of art, no matter what your religious beliefs are. And its nice to see such sincere filmmaking get rewarded so.

Here in Northwest Arkansas, every single night and weekend showing in all the area theaters playing it(and this is a Metropolitan area) is sold out until after the weekend.

Already.

Amazing.

I have not EVER seen a film do that, personally.

Still, it's not on nearly enough screens to compete with the big blockbusters like Spiderman. But it will have an amazing per-screen average.

jwerner 02-26-04 09:37 AM

With this kind of response, many more screens will be added.

DealMan 02-26-04 10:06 AM

Many more screens were already added. It was supposed to open in 2000 theaters just a week ago, and the hype grew to such levels than an additional 1000 theaters were added before launch, with NewMarket struggling to manufacture extra prints.

More numbers are coming in, and Brandon Gray from BoxOfficeMojo now says The Passion made over $26 million on Wednesday, and could potentially beat the Two Towers for the 3rd biggest Wednesday opening of all time!

Newmarket Projects $15 million - $20 million opening Day for Passion

DRG 02-26-04 10:22 AM

I'm guessing a huge first two weekends, followed by a huge dropoff, but after that it'll stay steady for weeks.

Something like:
Weekend 1 - $50 mil
Weekend 2 - $25 mil
Weekend 3 - $8.5 mil
Weekend 4 - $7.5 mil
Weekend 5 - $6 mil
Weekend 6 - $5.5 mil
Weekend 7 - $5 mil
Weekend 8 - $4.5 mil
etc. etc.

It seems few showings here (Madison, WI) are selling out in advance. I checked through the weekend at our most popular theater yesterday on their website and only one showing was sold out: 7:00pm on Saturday. Now it is shown as not sold out which could only mean some people returned their tickets. I guess it depends on the area.

I'm sure we will still get big crowds and I'm going today but this is not LOTR.

natesfortune 02-26-04 10:29 AM

Don't forget that Easter is also coming up - this film will play big through that, I think.

jwerner 02-26-04 10:35 AM

It's going to have more repeat sales than even ROTK in my opinion. The Christians will want to take those that have not seen it because of it being so emotionally and spiritually driven.

Giles 02-26-04 10:41 AM

I find it impressive that my friend who rarely (to never) sees movies in the theatre (video rental 99% of the time). Is planning on seeing this film this weekend. Given the subject matter and the number of people who want to see this film, (who normally don't go to the movies), might dramtically boost ticket sales/box office numbers.

Well here are the numbers from Box Office Mojo:

'Passion' Nails $26.6 Million on First Day

natesfortune 02-26-04 03:19 PM

:jawdrop:

Wow. It beat The Matrix sequals and The Two Towers! On about HALF the screens.

Simply amazing.

Its per screen average is going to be phenomenal.

SomeVoices 02-26-04 03:27 PM

Wow, it even blew away the early estimates I thought might be a little high.

That's because it started playing around 10 PM Tuesday night.

Last autumn I maxed out my shares on the Hollywood Stock Exchange for PASON - buying each share at $15. I was amazed it was so ridiculously undervalued! When trading was halted last night, it was at $145 a share. And unlike most movies after a trade halt, it'll probably go UP further.

I've been telling people for months that this movie was going to be huge. I still can't believe that it wasn't as obvious to others as it was to me.

BRIAN 1972 02-26-04 03:37 PM

"NAILS"??!! (nice review title)

lol

i think it will do $200-$300M domestically and will have an incredible international take - how many christians in the world? most will see it. some twice. it is a story that crosses oceans/borders.

think titanic.

Short of my gut instinct 33 million but not bad!

Two Billion Christians in the world.

And they won't be the ONLY ones seeing this. Of course, many of those people can't afford to go see movies(Christians and non-Christians), but the point is still the same.
