top 5 romantic comedies?

need some comedies to watch with my gf....
thnx

Troy Stiffler 02-24-04 09:36 AM

When Harry Met Sally (my favorite)
Cinema Paradiso
Punch Drunk Love (may not be your thing)
Notting Hill
Bridget Jones' Diary

I'd say that When Harry Met Sally is the best. I think that Cinema Paradiso is a better film, but not as frequently funny.

SFranke 02-24-04 09:43 AM

Charade, no doubt, is among the top 5.

ToddSm66 02-24-04 09:51 AM

It Happened One Night
Bringing Up Baby
The Shop Around the Corner
You Can't Take It with You
The Philadelphia Story
Ninotchka

ArchibaldTuttle 02-24-04 10:09 AM

the only movie I like that remotely resembles a romantic comedy is The Fisher King, its some what dark, but is in my personal top 10 movies of all time probably

Four Weddings & A Funeral

"Romantic bittersweet" is more like it, but it's a really fine film. Characters you can really feel like you know.

Groundhog Day

I defy you not to laugh at this.

Love Actually

Not on DVD yet, but this thread will last, so why not. An assortment of several short intertwined stories, and while there isn't much time for each character to be developed fully, it doesn't matter, as the film is so entertaining. Funny, touching, and sad.

Amelie

So what if it's french? It's stylish and terribly cute. Watch it.

The Princess Bride

Um... yeah, I'm stretching it there. But it's dashing, romantic, and at times incredibly funny.

Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity

Substancially darker than your average, but either of these are excellent romantic comedies.

Shakespeare In Love

Brilliant.

The Wedding Singer

Could have been just very average, but the addition of the plastic 80's background and some really funny characters make this a great romantic comedy.

And finally...

Chasing Amy

A film that'll make you laugh, then kick your ass.

Charade
Notting Hill
Americas Sweethearts
Jerry Maguire
Say Anything

grrkittymeow 02-24-04 10:18 AM

amelie
i told my boyfriend to see it and he loved it so it wouldn't be one sided with you bored
true romance
a cute movie about true romance... kind of bloody at times of the action parts... but all in all it's way cute
chasing amy
such a funny movie with a cute plot ;) more of a comedy but there is romance in it
that's all i can think of right now :)

ok good recommendations so far.
here's a few that we've seen already:

Serendipity - this one was cute
Best Friend's wedding - she liked it alot
Sweet Home alabama - was good

Jack's Smirking 02-24-04 10:31 AM

How about About a Boy ? Not a romantic comedy in the traditional sense, but it will leave you with the same warm and fuzzy feelings.

everyone has already mentioned all of the ones i was going to, except one. pretty woman

matome 02-24-04 12:47 PM

Pretty Woman. Sheesh, scary to think that movie's almost fifteen years old. I remember seeing it in the theater like it was yesterday.

IC_Freeze 02-24-04 01:26 PM

forgot to mention jerry mcguire too :)

lisadoris 02-24-04 03:40 PM

In keeping with stuff nobody's mentioned, I'd go with Mystic Pizza nice early Julia Roberts and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance by Matt Damon.

Playing by Heart is a bit uneven but still funny and romantic.

The Truth About Cats & Dogs I totally love this movie but I think I'm the only person that loves this movie.

I am shocked and dismayed to see so many posts and not have even one of them mention the mother of all romantic comedies, Annie Hall.

Some more:

Sliding Doors

What's Up, Doc? (an homage to Bringing Up Baby, which was already mentioned, but funny enough in its own way to merit a view)

I Know Where I'm Going!

How To Marry A Millionaire

The Seven Year Itch

The Apartment

Defending Your Life

Very funny flick starring Albert Brooks who also written and directed and Meryl Streep about two people who just recently died and meet in the afterlife.
