Jim Carrey Movies

hey I'm thinking about collecting Jim Carrey movies, I was wondering if anyone could tell me his best work, so I can start off on the right foot . Obviously he's done loads of good stuff, but what are the best movies?!

thanx

Depends if you are into his slapstick comedy routines or some of the more dramatic roles. Personally I really liked The Truman Show.

Jim Carrey's best comedic role has got to be Ace Ventura Pet Detective. Don't get When Nature Calls though cause that sucked big time.

The Cable Guy and Truman show are his only good movies.

Sorry if that doesn't make for much of a collection.

Ok, well assuming that the poster is a Jim Carrey fan, that list can be expanded to include Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, Liar Liar, The Mask, and Bruce Almighty. All entertaining movies that showcase Jim's comedic talent.

If you don't like Jim Carrey much, stick with the above posters suggestions, namely the Truman Show. But his opinion is obviously one of someone who doesn't much enjoy Jim Carrey's comedic style, so that's something to note. The Cable Guy is a movie that, well, some love others don't.

I forgot about Dumb and Dumber.

So make that list: Dumb and Dumber, The Cable Guy, and Truman Show

You probably wouldn't want to start with Cable Guy. Funny movie, but he doesn't play the likeable character. His best work to me starting with his best:

Dumb & Dumber
Man On The Moon
Liar, Liar
Truman Show
Ace Ventura

And if you like what you see, the rest you can go from there. Just don't pick up The Majestic, you'll be disappointed.

Wow I am surprised to see some mention Cable Guy, everyone I talk to always hates it, I think it his best film and one of my favorite films.

My favorites of his.

Over the top, just plain funny Jim Carey:
Cable Guy
Ace Ventura
Ace Ventura: When Nature calls
Dumb and Dumber

More serious but still funny Jim Carey:
Man on the Moon
Truman Show

Frankly the rest of his films I don't think belong in the same league as the previous mentioned films. I think he tones down his humor in films like Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar as they are aimed at a broader audience in my opinion, more story and plot than just Jim Carey being funny IMO. As for Me, Myself and Irene, to much gross out humor and low brow humor IMO (not that the other films had none). The scene with the chicken and the police officer, unecessary, films like this miss subtlty, that sometimes the idea is funnier than actually showing it. But that is really what is popular these days I guess.

Big Jim Carrey fan here. Get everything except for "The Mask" and "The Grinch". "The Mask" was good until I turned 16. And I don't think that "The Grinch" was ever a good movie; though it was kind of cute.

If you need to "start", get:

Ace Ventura
Dumb and Dumber
The Cable Guy
The Truman Show
Man on the Moon

If I'm not mistaken, none of those DVDs are more than $15 in stores.

And for reference... Jim Carrey's Starred in the Following Films. And here's what I thought of them (on a "Jim Carrey Scale", that is).

Bruce Almighty (2003) ***/****
Majestic, The (2001) ***/****
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) */****
Me, Myself & Irene (2000) ****/****
Man on the Moon (1999) ***1/2/****
Truman Show, The (1998) ****/****
Liar Liar (1997) ****/****
Cable Guy, The (1996) ****/****
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) ***/****
Batman Forever (1995) **/****
Dumb & Dumber (1994) ****/****
Mask, The (1994) */****
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) ****/****
Once Bitten (1985) **/****

My personal favorite Jim Carrey movie would also be the first one I saw - Once Bitten.

Nobody mentioned The Majestic which I thought was his best non-comedic role. But maybe I'm in the minority on that one.

Bruce Almighty, The Mask, and Liar Liar are the only other ones that I really liked.

Good idea - here's my take on em... on a 'Jim Carrey scale' also.

Bruce Almighty (2003) 5/10
Majestic, The (2001) 4/10
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) 1/10
Me, Myself & Irene (2000) 5/10
Man on the Moon (1999) 5/10
Truman Show, The (1998) 6/10
Liar Liar (1997) 6/10
Cable Guy, The (1996) 6/10
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) 8/10
Batman Forever (1995) 1/10
Dumb & Dumber (1994) 6/10
Mask, The (1994) 7/10
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) 9/10
Once Bitten (1985) 7/10

Interesting (to me)... I thought I kinda liked Jim Carrey more than this - on a Jim Carrey scale, they rank higher than they would otherwise - I don't think any of his films would rank above a 6 or 7/10 on a regular scale for me.

I'll steal that idea. Here's a ranking of Jim's performances:

Bruce Almighty (2003) -/10
Majestic, The (2001) -/10
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) -/10
Me, Myself & Irene (2000) 5/10
Man on the Moon (1999) *7/10
Truman Show, The (1998) *4/10
Liar Liar (1997) -/10
Cable Guy, The (1996) 5/10
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) 6/10
Batman Forever (1995) 2/10
Dumb & Dumber (1994) 8/10
Mask, The (1994) 8/10
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) 10/10
Once Bitten (1985) 3/10

-, have not seen
*, on the drama scale, not the regular Comedy Carrey Scale

I'm wondering why no love for The Mask? Is it not cool to like that movie?

As for where to start? 1994 was the year of Carrey. That's where I would start. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Where is Earth Girls Are Easy?

It's a funky film, but kind of cute in an odd 80s way.

Yeah - Earth Girls...

Here's a few more that he's been in that weren't included before (again on the "Jim Carrey Scale":

Simon Birch - 7/10
Earth Girls Are Easy - 8/10
Dead Pool, The - 6/10
Peggy Sue Got Married - 8/10
