The Killer.
Die Hard has some great moments, but has been relagated to the cheese pile... whoever said DH is cheese free must be joking...
"Yippie kai ya mother... "
"welcome to the party pal!"
off the top of my head, not classic, just cheese IMO

Never knew what the hype was about Die Hard. It's a good film, but I think it's rememberd because it originated a plot template and a classic Bruce character. It has dated noticeably. John McTiernan's previous film, Predator, seems far better made with tight direction that has camera moves and a visual style that were 10 years ahead of its time. You could release it today and it would still feel contemporary.
The Killer has dated a bit as well, but the action scenes are still top notch and virtually unrivalled except by other HK Woo flicks. On the other hand, The Killer is hardly 'light entertainment' and I'd be more inclined to watch Die Hard to pass the time than something as depressing and overwrought as The Killer. Hard Boiled, on the other hand, I'd gladly watch repeatedly.

Die Hard. Much better plot construction, for one thing--there's not an ounce of fat on it. And in the words of the Clintster, a movie's gotta know its limitations. Die Hard does, and it keeps its tongue firmly in cheek when it needs to be.
The Killer, though, is a woozy, excessively serious, over the top amalgam of ultraviolence and ancient cliches from 1930s melodrama (the gangster who loves a blind girl! The cop who thinks the gangster's not a bad sort, but who's sworn to get him anyway!) It's effective ... but it's about as subtle as a sledgehammer. I dare say had it been made with a US director and cast, many of those who now consider it a classic would have hooted it off the screen on its initial release.

die hard for me. the annoying whiny voice of the girl in the killer and cheesy music just makes the killer seem like a corny action flick, if it werent for that it might stand a chance, but still a good movie imo

This is such a tough call!
I still haven't voted.
Maybe I'll save my vote for a tie break.
I just can't decide. Both are excellent. Both were highly influential on their genre. Both were star showcases.

Without a doubt, the Killer. Die Hard's a great action movie, but the kinetic shootouts in the Killer, Woo's (then revolutionary) multi-camera, multi-speed setups and kinetic editing (not to mention gunfight choreography) combined with high melodrama and pound-you-over-the-head tragic and ironic ending gets me every time. It's such a strange blend, but it works. And how can you not love a movie with a flashback in the first 20 minutes, to something that happened in the first 10 minutes?

This is one of those "if forced to, would you shoot your mother or your father" type of choices. Love them both too much to have an option either way...
...and you won't hear me say THAT too often.
