Return of the King - the number1 movie of 2003 (box office receipts)

If the estimates posted at boxofficemojo.com hold, by this time tomorrow The Return of the King will have passed Finding Nemo in box office receipts, to become the #1 movie of 2003 -- the first of the trilogy to achieve this honor.

It will be interesting to see how strong it is as a long-term performer, when it's done racking up more awards. Great job by the production team, cast and the studio. Remember those dark days of 2000-2001 when people predicted New Line would be sunk by this epic?

But Finding Nemo would still be the highest grossing film in the 12 months of 2003. Return of the King is the highest grossing film released in 2003.

This statistic is not measured by anyone. They only go by release date, not by money earned during the calendar year. If it were measured this way, the only films that could ever possibly "compete" would be those released in late spring/early summer (such as Finding Nemo).

Well, according to the execs and financial department, there is NO PROFIT from these movies. Guess New Line will fold afterall.

For that matter, why is Sony still around after Spider-Man all but tanked?

I think this has been pretty thoroughly debunked by now.
