Well, I don't think most teens between the ages of 13 and 17 would want to watch this film anyway.

As far as the strip club scene, I could have done without it but, at the same time, it kind of showed me that Bob wasn't all that interested in "in-your-face sex" as much as he would rather be with someone who cares. That's kind of how I read it. He seemed bored in that club.

Sorry--don't understand your question. I don't so much "care" as I was just raising the small issue that it seemed like a very mild "R" for me (compared to others like Eyes Wide Shut or Fight Club or Platoon or... Hardly any swearing, no sex scenes, just the short strip club scene.
But the point is a good one that it's not probably the type of movie that'd appeal to the 13-17 age group anyway.

I laughed when Bob whispers to the stripper "thank you" when he leaves the club.

And in addition, any 13-17 year old interested in this film should be able to handle seeing a topless stripper.

Great movie. Definitely love or hate. I enjoyed it, related well to some of the dialogue and Bill's performance was pretty damn good and dry. Liked it a lot.

Fabulous cinematography as well, some of the best I've seen.

Yeah, and did you catch the bit where he thought the stripper was falling and reached out to help her? He is a very funny man.

In some scenes, particularly when she had the blue sweater on so that may answer my question, didn't she look pregnant or a little plump? There was another scene where she was listening to the headsets and she was resting her hand on her tummy like she had a baby belly.

Not that I mind I think Scarlet is gorgeous all around.

just saw the film last night....
it was good.. i liked it .. some parts made me laugh out loud.. it was well made.
But i dont think it's oscar worthy... althought the acting was pretty good.. it was far from excellent or challenging. It was kind of a light hearted, different drama/comedy film which was interesting to see, but far from being ground breaking.

Who said something has to be groundbreaking to be good? Casablanca wasn't groundbreaking, it was just really good.

I just watched this tonight (rented it from Netflix) and I must say, I loved every moment of it! I watched it with my parents... my mom thought it was boring and didn't have a point. Whatever

Great acting by Bill and Scarlett. I'll put this on my to buy list, because I definitely want to see it again.

I got mine from the promotional department. I would say ebay would be the best place to look since I'm not sure who else would be able to sell these.

I "know" what Bob whispered at the end, because I know exactly what I would have said:

"You're a stronger person than you know. I believe in you. Believe in yourself. You'll get through this. Take hold of the reins of your life. Don't end up like me. Okay?"

" I'm going to ask you a couple of standard questions, okay? Have you or any of your family been diagnosed schizophrenic? Mentally incompetant? are you habitually using drugs? Stimulants? Alcohol? and are you menstruating right now?"

yup. that's what he said.. that's what he said indeed. Why? Back off man, he's a scientist.

I have a question that is unrelated to the whispering end that everyone is talking about.

Spoiler:
The first night when they go out partying, what went on in that bar when they were chased out by the guy with the gun. And what the hell was that gun anyway?

Now that's a good question.

I don't have time to properly respond right now but I picked this up on my last business trip to the States.
Let me say in my ten years here in Japan, there's a lot I could relate to and this movie has done the best to capture not only the Japanese experience but also being a stranger in a strange land anywhere in my humble honest opinion.
Well done, and if you didn't enjoy it watch it "one more time, with intesity!"

I thought it was a solid film, but nothing that special.

The problem I have, and Sophia admits to this herself, is that she couldn't come up with anything better. In a way, this is a cop-out, and to me was a sign of other problems that the movie had. Sure, interpret it as an artistic move if you will, but I don't think it was that powerful, and along with the rest of the ending, felt contrived. It didn't seem as though she had an idea of what she wanted to do, and then made the ending. It seemed as though she wanted to make a powerful ending, and then manipulated the idea to fit this want. Didn't seem genuine to me. So I did feel as though it was a gimmick, in the sense that she set out to do something powerful, and this is pretty much the best she came up with. If she had this idea, and it turned out to be powerful, I think the ending would have seemed more genuine.

i just watched it today. while not the best movie ever made or even of last year (rotk all the way), it was still a very well made and effective little movie. if murray does win best actor its because, his performance is real and very natural. also, why is this movie rated R? yes there is a strip club scene with 3 seconds of nudity, but what else? this should have easily been a pg-13 at the very most.
