Is he that way the whole movie. I got the impression from the trailor that it was someone he knew and that one time he went back in time he f'ed something up and the guy ended up being a goth punk that was going to cause him trouble in the "new" present.

Watching this movie all I could think of was that episold of the Simpsons were Homer keeps changing stuff. "Now remember son, if you ever go back in time don't touch anything!"
Also about it sitting on the shelf, I don't think so. AK was a producer on the film and I really don't see the guy shelving his own film. (unless of course he didn't always have producer credit... maybe some one can shine some light on it)

I'm all Kutcher-ed out. I really like that 70s show and I still like him on it as Kelso...but I don't know bout this movie. He was on the today show yesterday and punk'd Katie Couric. It was uncomfortably bad.

Personally, I thought this movie was bad- very bad. The idea behind the story was pretty good, but the execution was horrendous. I tried to look past Kutcher's obvious lack of acting ability, but none of the other actors did much to make up for it.
Sounds like I am in the minority though, most of you seemed to have liked it. Surprising . . .

The AP review of it kicks off with these words:
Very few movies have made me want to get up from my seat and leave the theater. “The Butterfly Effect” is one of them.
And it’s not even Ashton Kutcher’s fault, though he’s an easy target — the “Dude, Where’s My Car?” dude asking to be taken seriously in a dramatic role.
Besides serving as one of the film’s executive producers, he plays bearded, flannel-clad college student Evan Treborn, who goes back in time by reading his old journals in hopes of reversing his wretched childhood.
What Evan finds there is gratuitously disgusting: memories of molestation and brutal animal abuse, among the traumatic events that seem shocking for shock’s sake. And because he returns to his past repeatedly, we’re forced to watch all this over and over, with slightly varying results each time.
I kept hoping this would turn out to be one of Kutcher’s elaborate “Punk’d” pranks — that the cameramen would pop out from behind the scenes, laughing, and that this attempt at drama/sci-fi/whatever would all be a joke on us.
It wasn’t, but that reminds me — for fans of the MTV series, especially younger fans who deify Kutcher, “The Butterfly Effect” is probably inappropriate. It’s certainly inappropriate for fans of film.
I think I'll pass.

This movie looks absolutely horrible, and frankly, i'm shocked to hear someone declare it the "best movie i've seen in a while." remind me never to listen to trigger's movie recommendations.

Schindlers List has people being murdered...that's what I heard...better skip it....
Maybe you should make up your own mind and not let what you "hear" make up your mind for you, especially before a movie is released.
I've seen the movie, and yes, there is dark subject matter. It's not like they include the kiddie porn subject as a happy, funny scene. Don't worry,

while there are plenty of amusing blurbs on RT about this right now (it's hovering around 30%, not exactly a ringing endorsement), I really like this one:
""The Butterfly Effect" tries to prove that small actions have big effects... but it really proves that January movies tend to suck."
-- David Foucher, HERE BOSTON

Kutcher Clams Up
Actor Ashton Kutcher is so upset by poor reviews of his new movie The Butterfly Effect, he has reportedly canceled all interviews to promote it. The film and its star were panned after being screened at the Sundance Festival recently - Variety magazine said it "grows more ridiculous by the quarter-hour" and The Boston Globe said it was "hooted off the screen at Sundance". And Ashton, who was reportedly axed from a new movie by director Cameron Crowe because of poor acting, isn't happy. A source tells gossip site The Scoop, "He's feeling pretty beat up right now. He doesn't want to talk to a lot of reporters and he's canceling interviews - doing some that are guaranteed to be friendly, but steering pretty clear of anyone who he thinks is going to take another swipe at him." A spokeswoman for movie distributors New Line confirmed to The Scoop some interviews were canceled, but insists it has nothing to do with the film's reception: "We've cut down because he's doing so much we didn't have time to do everything," she says, adding "we're thrilled with him and the film's reception."

saw it last night, I enjoyed it. Ashton has his moments of totally not being able to act, but he also does have some decent moments. the film story is alright. I can't bash the film. Might have helped that I saw it for free, but eh, better then most other crap out there.

You know what? This is another case where I just have to disagree with most of the critics...
There are parts of this movie that are very uncomfortable and disturbing... but it was one of the best movies I have seen in a while. I think it is worth your time.

I'm going to have to disagree with most of the critics, as well.
As previously mentionned, there are several scenes that are quite disturbing, and some of the violence is quite brutal. It definitely earned the R-rating.
That being said, I wouldn't call this a great film, but I wouldn't call it a horrible movie either; it was decent.
I can't help but I think it's just becoming popular to bash Ashton. I haven't read any of the reviews, so I don't know the popular grievances, but I thought it was acted well enough, directed well enough (there were some parts that really startled me), and while the premise doesn't really make all that much sense, it works well enough if you give it a chance and don't think too hard about the metaphysics of it all.
