Where are all the dwarf armies?

I was attempting to answer a question from a friend about ROTK but am not doing a good job. He wants to know why no dwarven army helped out in any of the battles in any of the movies. I attempted to explain that they were busy holding off their own orcish invasion, but am not as clear on this one. Any more insight into this?

"Who will you look to when we are gone? The Dwarves? They hide in their caves seeking riches, they care nothing for the troubles of others." --Elrond

At least, this was film-Elrond's take on the matter in his conversation with Gandalf in FOTR. Gimli is a notable exception.

Of course, the appendix....and please don't quote the movie when someone wants to know what really happened.

Many of Gimli's folk died fighting off orcs at The Lonely Mountain (see The Hobbit).

The Appendices at the end of RotK are you friend.

That's all well and good, but it's not in the film. It is epic and fascinating as usual, of course, because Tolkien is the man.
