This looks like a fun movie. I'm pretty positive that this isn't the movie many people have in mind. No, this ain't going to be a dark, violent, vampire hunter D movie. Looks to be more in te vein of The Mummy, and considering that it's intended as a franchise movie, it'll be a pg-13 flick.

But it looks fun...Sommers can make a good mindless adventure. Though it's a little disapointing knowing this won't be as cool as it could be.

Looks very good. Kind of like if they were to make a Castlevania movie.

Maybe it's just as a fan of the old Universal flicks of the '30s and '40s, but I wish the look of some of the monsters was more "classic." Really just had glimpses of Frankenstein's Monster, Wolfman, Dracula but I'm not sure about them. Dracula in particular looked rather goofy, like an "Alien" ripoff. But the general look was pretty nifty and of course Hugh Jackman rocks. I just hope this is more "Mummy" and less godawful "Mummy Returns."

No, this ain't going to be a dark, violent, vampire hunter D movie.
From what I saw, this is a dark film. It's a hell of a lot darker than the Mummy, and a lot more violent too. This looks nothing like the Mummy. I also noticed a complete lack of jokes and humor in the trailer, something that wasn't the case in the Mummy movies.

I see little resemblence other than the film containing well known monsters written about in famous novels.

DrMcKittrick 01-16-04 06:24 PM

You would've thought they would only have one villian per movie and make a trilogy out of it. I don't see how each story is going to mesh with the others. Still, a must see.

Well the main resemblance is having the same writer director at the helm. Seeing as his last three films have all followed the same action/horror/comedy bit, I'd say it's quite obvious this will follow suit. And since the budget is so insanely high, it CAN'T be that violent, because there is no way in hell this is going to be R rated.

Another resemblance? Updated action movie based on Universal's horror movie characters. With a kick butt hero taking them out. Sounds like The Mummy to me. Sure it doesn't have the Indiana Jones feel, but it will be a similar fun adventure. Everything points to that.

And go back and watch the trailer for the original Mummy. Not a bit of humor anywhere. While I can't say they will be as overt with the humor, this movie will be a fun adventure, not a dark violent retelling of these classic characters.

Nonetheless I have high hopes this will be a fun ride. MR was...junk imo. But I highly enjoy Deep Rising and The Mummy, so I think Sommers can do a great job on an adventure film like this. it's just too bad the rating won't allow the silly excessive gore he got to do in Deep Rising.

RocShemp 01-16-04 07:13 PM

Well I'm looking forward to it being a Deep Rising-esque gore fest but with little or no humour. I'll try not to hold my breath.

QuiGonJosh 01-16-04 07:58 PM

this flick looks decent! Too much really crappy CGI for my tastes though... I hope this is R with quite a lot of Gore and such...oh man...if not maybe we'll get an Unrated DVD or somethin..

Jackskeleton 01-16-04 08:02 PM

It looks like a pop corn flick with vampires who wont be looking in mirrors and being saved from drowning, so I'll watch it atleast once.

rexinnih 01-16-04 09:56 PM

A Definate watch for me. Some of the CG in the trailer looked a bit "iffy" but vampires, dark-goth look to it, and Hugh Jackman= I'll be there.

Looks good to me. Hope some of the CGI in the trailer will be touched up though. :)

Looks okay to me. I don't really like Stephen Sommers. But each of his movies have gotten better and better; yes...I like The Mummy 2 more than the original. So I'd say that he's definatly 'developing'.

The trailer didn't 'excite' me like most trailers like this do. But I think it'll be fun.

Was the anime version, "Hellsing", any good? I haven't seen it yet.

RocShemp 01-19-04 06:33 AM

Hellsing (the Japanese cartoon) is both good and bad.

Alucard, the main badass, is the reason to watch the show. He's so sadistic and cool throughout the whole thing and really doesn't care what's going on so long as he has something to shoot.

But the plot.... Well, it feels like at first they didn't have much of a plot to work with and by episode four (I think) they realized this. Heck, there's an episode that makes me think about Seinfeld (but not in a good way) because it was a show about nothing. Seriously, absolutely nothing happens for an entire epsiode and I'm not sure why they even bothered to include it. The main villain comes out of nowhere and has very little in the way of a backstory. It seems that late in the game the writers came up with a really good story but realized the series wasn't going to run for that long so tried to cram all the major story arcs they came up with in the remaining episodes (at least, that's the feeling I was left with). Also, characters are constantly introduced and then dropped almost instantly throughout the show.

Still, it's got a very cool visual style and some of the episodes are a lot of fun (if mindless) with some great action sequences. I wouldn't recommend you go out and buy it but at least borrow it or rent it.

Seven Sommers + Bad CGI= Shitty Movie!

After watching that trailer i lost all hope for it.

Dr. DVD 01-19-04 08:16 AM

When will we see more publicity for this? Will a preview be placed in the SuperBowl? I have yet to see one, but haven't been to any mainstream movies lately.

PalmerJoss 01-19-04 08:32 AM

The word was that Universal would show a trailer for it during the superbowl, but now that they've debuted the full trailer in theatres and online I woudn't be so sure.

Dr. DVD 01-19-04 12:33 PM

They did a spot for The Mummy during the Superbowl while the full one was in theaters , so you never know.

dknight04 01-19-04 08:03 PM

Looks great. From the director of "The Mummy" and unfortunate "The Mummy Returns". Some nice visual effects and action scenes.

Wow, what terrible special effects.

I don't know if I'm so psyched to see this. I'll catch it at a matinee, I guess. Until then, I've always got both cuts of Army of Darkness.
