A Rant About TV Spot for "50 First Dates"...And Other Hypocritical Media B.S.

I'm sitting here watching football this afternoon, and the TV spot for the new Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore movie "50 First Dates" comes on. The ad features Drew Barrymore taking a baseball bat and wailing away on Rob Schneider. He runs away from her and she catches up to him and once again keeps hitting him with the bat. Funny? Yes, in a Three Stooges way. But I have a problem with the double standard here. Take this ad and just imagine if it were reversed, with Schneider taking the bat to Barrymore. Could you just imagine the outcry from Feminist groups and others? Why is okay to have this happen to a guy but not a girl? Don't get me wrong, I'm not a nut-job that decries there's too much violence in movies. But I do have a problem with this hypocritical bullshit that exists in all media today. Like that song "Pretty Fly for a white Guy." What it's basically saying is that he's okay despite the fact he's white. What if a band put out a song called "Pretty Fly for a Black Guy." Another example recently was in Entertainment Weekly magazine. In reviews of Video/DVD there was a picture of family from series "Little House on the Prarie" (being released on DVD). The caption underneath stated, "We're All So......White." Could you just imagine if a caption underneath "The Jeffersons" read "We're All So.....Black."??? This freakin' liberal media gets away with this hypocritical bullshit all the time. Why?

I'm going to make a movie with your scenerio of having the girl beaten to a pulp and then chased and beaten some more. when the audiance doesn't enjoy it, I'll blame you.

Then I'll just have to deny everything. :D

It's about history and social status. Simple.

Men have "held down" women for a long time. For a while they couldn't vote. In the 50's/60's, they were pretty much ONLY house wives. In studies it states men make more money and run more businesses and get the promotions.

Black/White thing--same situation only with races.

That's why it's funny to see things in reverse. It's an odd way to spin reality.

Personally, I'm a guy, and I think it'd be disturbing to see a guy whack a girl with a baseball club. I don't understand how that wouldn't bother you, either. Sure, if it's an all out comedy, maybe it wouldn't be AS bad, but maybe in poor taste nonetheless.

I'm not saying I wouldn't be disturbed. I would. All I'm saying is IF the situation were reversed, I'm sure the outcry would be enormous. But it shouldn't be okay to have it the current way either. Same with race. After all, two wrongs don't make a right. If the neighbor does something stupid, then it isn't right for myself to turn around and do the same thing just in order to even things out. So this current generation of young kids that are growing up (who never experienced the trials and tribulations of women and minorities throughout history, and had nothing to do with any of it) should not have to be witness to such indignant acts and gestures. I would think our society would be wiser after some of the hardships our forefathers put people through.

Groucho 01-11-04 05:04 PM

If you want to see a role reversal of the 50 First Dates thing, watch the first five minutes of The Way of the Gun.

caiman 01-11-04 05:25 PM

There should be more movies about black women getting beaten senseless with baseball bats.

*not racist

Ginwen 01-11-04 07:25 PM

The thing is, it's not just any guy being hit with a baseball bat, it's Rob Schneider being hit with a baseball bat. Have you seen his other movies? I think it's warranted.

RyoHazuki 01-11-04 08:01 PM

I was more disturbed because it was the almost exact same scenario we saw in the Mr. Deeds trailer.

liberal media

rotfl

MrPeanut 01-12-04 02:01 AM

You think it's funny (albeit in a low brow 3 stooges kind of way) as it is. You think it would be disturbing if it were reversed. You've said you'd feel that way, but you don't think the liberal media should not be allowed to feel that way, cause then they would be hypocritical?

What's that word for when you hold someone else to an entire different set of standards than yourself?

silentbob007 01-12-04 07:28 AM

If only we could get one of those bat scenes for Carrot Top ....

Daytrip 01-12-04 10:41 AM

some people(namely the ones that would actually be upset over a movie trailer) should be unceremoniously shot

I disagree.... I think there should be quite a large ceremony

What do you mean by "went south"? Are you some kind of regionalist? The south will rise again, my friend, and when they do they'll be making a stop in Carol Stream, Ill.

Just kidding, I'm from the Midwest too.

Exactly...it's all about the person, not the gender. If Kathie Lee Gifford was getting hit with the bat, we'd all laugh just as loud.

And if it were David Spade or Chris Kattan under the bat, she'd be getting a humanitarian award? :D

sararekuforever 01-12-04 06:07 PM

I think that what should be done is that no one should be hitting people with baseball bats and only hitting baseballs with baseball bats made for hitting baseballs

That's why people who hit people with baseball bats and bad batters are bad, because they make life miserable for baseball bat which says come to me ball and i will make you go out of the park, batter up yay!

Danol will be sorely missed by me. I'm happy to see others are coming to take up his mantle.

This makes no sense. I've read it many times over, and still can't figure out the point you're trying to make.

Okay, so just take out the word "liberal." Pretend I just said "media." It's just a habit with me. I know the media isn't as liberal as it was the past, but it still seems to delight in the frequent slamming of "white" guys; especially ones that are achievers.

I know it's only a freakin' movie trailer. I'm just using it as an example. I normally don't read so much into something as simple as that. It just ignited something I've been noticing for some time now. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

jaeufraser 01-12-04 06:50 PM

I think it's pretty simple. It's not funny to watch someone helpless get beat upon. It's not a gender issue (well maybe to some it is) but simply a question of whether it seems like an act of cruelty or just something silly. If a guy was beating on a helpless girl, screaming for her life, that's not funny. but I laughed my ass off when Woody Harrelson punched the crap out of the girls boobs in Kingpin (granted, she does win in the end). Not to mention, in these movies, nobody really gets hurt, and these guys are known for their physical comedy. I don't know, it's not a double standard or bad in my opinion. As someone said before, I think we'd all laugh if the tables were turned and Rob Schneider was beating on Kathy Lee Gifford.

You've made no point. You mention a double standard that you find hypocritical and displeasing, but you don't mention what the double standard is.

As has already been said, "girl hitting guy" is funny. "Guy hitting girl" is cruel. In this case, you are comparing two different things and naturally they'd have different standards.

If you want to dispute that, and say that "girl hitting guy" is equally cruel, or "guy hitting girl" is equally funny, you would have a point. But since you agree with it, with us, and with the media, you are in no position to expect them to have higher standards than your own.

You are not only being hypocritical when you feel "girl hitting guy" is funny while "guy hitting girl" is cruel, but you are again hypocritcal when you tell us that we aren't allowed to feel the same way.

Hmmmmmm...I guess you may have a point. Let me wrap my brain around it a bit more, though.

lesterlong 01-12-04 09:12 PM

I think it would be funny if Rob Schneider was hitting Barrymore with a bat. And then he went down the road and start hitting Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu proclaiming "That's for the 2 hours you stole from me!"

Tommy Ceez 01-13-04 03:24 PM

Since its a COMEDY, its probably funnier to see the one considered STRONGER getting beaten...not mant comedies with a wimpy man getting savagly beaten by a pro football player.

"Pretty fly for a white guy" was a white band making fun of wiggers.

QuikSilver 01-14-04 06:15 PM

It seemed like the previews for this movie gives away all the funny parts of the movie.
