American Beauty, with Braveheart a close second.
. . . I have Forest Gump as the worst of the lot. A big disappointment for me (probably because I liked the book so much).

American Beauty: fav among perverts, i didnt think it was "all that".
Beautiful Mind, A: never seen it...
Braveheart: to long and drug out IMO, got bored with the battle scenes after a while
Chicago: (puke) 'nuff said.
English Patient, The: (dry heave)
Forrest Gump: best of the lot, got my vote.
Gladiator: good movie... but best picture for that year? wow, musta been a weak year in film...
Schindler's List: good stuff
Shakespeare in Love: uhg...
Titanic: over hyped poop. I didnt find anything riveting about the movie personally, all I was praying for was Leo to just die already. Unfortunately I had to wait all the way until the end of the picture just to see the only part of interest.

None of the ones on the list...
In the Mood for Love would be my choice... it is a terrific love story that is nothing like an ordinary love story. Brilliant Cinematography and use of colors. The score is excellent, two different melody playing on top of each other. One melody is playful and the other is precise. The character development is meticulous and the performance by the actors is wonderful.
Lord of the Rings: Trilogy by Peter Jackson is a close second for me.
Color of Paradise from Iran would be on a third place. This is truly brilliant cinema.
Must mention that the films on the list are great films, but if I am forced to pick one it would be English Patient. I think.

The English Patient, of course. Critically speaking, it is easily the best film on the list and certainly one of the very best of the 1990s. American Beauty is probably second, although I find the idea of ranking fillms to be a pretty silly exercise.
OTOH, I certainly agree that Schindler's, and probably Titanic, will have more longevity.
Braveheart, Schindler's, and SiL are all very good films with few flaws. Titanic is substantially flawed in one or two areas, but still very solid entertainment. The rest are totally undeserving of even their nominations, IMHO (except for Chicago, which I have not yet seen).

The Fugitive? I thought it was a good popcorn flick but didn't know it got nominated.
Four wedding and a funeral was horrible.
Jerry Maguire? It wasn't that good.
Schindler's list was a very obvious winner for that year. And gets my nod for Best of the Best.

Definitely an interesting poll... I would have never guessed that the voting would look anything like the current results...
As for myself... I would have to go with Forest Gump by a mile (simply no contest in my mind)... the originality of the film combined with the heartfelt acting / storyline and its' replay value (I watch this movie so much more frequently than I do any of the others) it's a no-brainer in my mind.

It's not one of the choices but it has to be L.A. Confidential, IMO. An absolutely perfect film and the best film by far in about the last twenty years or so. Robbed at Oscar time that year by the mediastorm known as Titanic.
