Alright, I'm sure there are enough of these posts but whatever. I'm trying to make a movie list for someone and I need help. I would like suggestions that are a good example of the genre, style, or national cinema. here are some categories:

Classics (aka essential viewing)
horror
western
film noir
crime/heist/caper
comedy
documentary
war
sci-fi
french
italian
japanese
misc.

thanks alot for your time.

that's a tough request. i could pop off dozens of movies in nearly every category, that i love, off the top of my head, and given time to think of some older or more obscure titles, both in my collection and in my wish list, that list could grow considerably. ;)

are you asking maybe for a top three or top five from people? are you asking for a list of things that someone who mainly watches mainstream movies may not have seen? are you asking for anything in general, perhaps for someone who hasn't watched very many movies at all?

some type of parameters may help folks to answer you more easily. :)

ok its for someone who has seem a lot of pretty mainstream things, but mostly newer things. and ill take as many is i can get. the thing is i could think of dozens and dozens for each category, but i thought the people of the forum could help me in pinpointing the ones best to show or more essential to each genre or style.

also, for classics i don't just mean the old widely though of classic films, but also filmsthat you think should be seen by everyone.
