The Killer. Thats a real chick flick.

TomOpus 01-02-04 12:27 AM

Traffic is pretty "mainstream".

Picnic at Hanging Rock might be interesting for you and mom to watch.

MrN 01-02-04 02:31 AM

So, wait, we should pick from the titles NOT on your list? I can see this is already confusing.

My recommendation - either Notorious or That Obscure Object of Desire.

KenobiKid22 01-02-04 02:39 AM

139 Wild Strawberries. I got this one for Christmas and I loved it.

mookiemeister 01-02-04 06:35 AM

Charade!

Definitely Salo is the movie for you and your mother. Grab some Jiffypop and enjoy.

Seriously, Tokyo Story is a touching story about the generation gap as it occurs (occurred) in post war Japan. A good movie for you and mom to watch together. Ozu's style is not as western as Kurosawa's but the story transcends style.

The Tati trilogy is something for the whole family too. My son, who can't read the subtitles, loves Mon Oncle and Playtime. The slapstick stiutations and sight gags don't need subtitles.

Rashomon is a great story about aspects of truth. And the first half of High and Low is the best Ed McBain crime drama on film.

Some of the other films from your list are an acquired taste. Alphaville, Man Bites Dog, Tokyo Drifter, How to Get Ahead .

Your DVDProfiler says that you have all those that you listed? Anyway, I'd recommend Solaris because that movie is great.

Deftones 01-02-04 01:16 PM

Armageddon! That's my answer to all Criterion questions!

Pants 01-02-04 05:47 PM

So you have ALL the Criterions that are not on that list. Well that would be nearly 100 films or more. Yet you need our advice on what to watch?

Anyone who has aquired all those titles and doesn't know what to watch is beyond me.

GatorDeb 01-02-04 06:23 PM

It's ironic isn't it. The more DVDs I have the more time I spend deciding what to watch :D

Jazzbutcher 01-02-04 06:46 PM

Wages of Fear or George Washington

or Rashomon

DVD Smurf 01-02-04 07:46 PM

Seventh Seal...maybe...

funkyryno 01-02-04 10:29 PM

Ballad of a Soldier

I say definitely, but then, that's just me.

I'll also second Picnic at Hanging Rock and Rashomon.

Maybe also I Know Where I'm Going?

Maybe you could tell us more what you're in the mood for, or what you're looking for in watching a movie with Mom? I mean, I don't know if you'd really want to watch Dead Ringers or The Night Porter with her. ;)

(both of which are trippy flicks I'd recommend) :)

I'm dying to watch The Pornographers with her but she'd skin me alive. :)

I pretty much like most movies I see and these are lauded the world over, and I'm going to get to see all of them at some point :)

We ended up watching Lord of the Flies (I'd read the story). I fell asleep, she hated it because
Spoiler:
two kids are killed in cold blood
. I told her that was the whole point of the movie, how human beings revert to that if placed in a salvage environment, but she hated it.

Then we watched Fiddler on the Roof - first time for her, second for me - and she loved that. Same for The Kid. Maybe we'll watch a Hitchcock... she says she likes that :)

QuiGonJosh 01-03-04 04:57 PM

Red Beard!

xDareDevilx 01-03-04 06:19 PM

definitely charade. also, if you or her are christians or spiritual (but not devout in church traditions), i suggest last temptation of christ....

We watched Se7en and she liked it better than Fight Club. She doesn't like Fincher's films. I thought Fight Club was brilliant (I'd seen both once before a long time ago and remembered Se7en better than Fight Club). We're watching K-Pax next (following Spacey :D)

It's so easy to pick movies she'll like if they're not Criterion. I have her taste pretty much down. I knew Fight Club wasn't her thing but I want to expose her to everything :) (she'll watch whatever I watch). I know K-Pax, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Kid are her thing - some melodrama, some humor.

RyoHazuki 01-03-04 07:10 PM

Watch Signs. Not criterion but still a good Melodrama/comedy.

JamesBrian 01-03-04 11:58 PM

Black Narcissus and Written on the Wind should work well with mom. I made my mom sit through Serial Mom once and she hated it - at least it wasn't Desperate Living!

jayson1017 01-04-04 11:51 PM

Stay away from Salo. I'm sure you're mom won't appreciate it.

I'd say go with the Kurosawa Samurai set --- Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro

Pants 01-05-04 11:09 AM

This has got to be the funniest thread ever. Every single person who responded fundamentally missunderstood the original post.

Go back and read it again guys. Hint: She doesn't own Salo ;)

jayson1017 01-05-04 11:22 AM

I just re-read the original post. It was an awkward way of phrasing the question. It might be easier for her to list the CC dvds that she doesn't have which probably means that wants us to give her recommendations from the titles she hasn't listed, which is not very easy for us to recommend since we'd have to look up the titles that she has. This is added work, so I don't think I could be of much help, since I'm too lazy to look up the titles.

But giving the list a quick glance, I'd highly recommend 'M'. Its so great that I have been trying to convince my wife to watch it.
