who says there arent gay people in middle earth? AFAIK, we only see sam and aragorn actually try and hook up with females.. whos to say that merry or gimli or gandalf arent gay?

Yes, it's also racist like every other film that portrays black as bad and white as good... It's the oldest metaphor in goodguy/badguy storytelling. Hence Gandalf is the White Wizard and the ringwraiths are black.... It would just look odd being the other way around, no? It's not a comment on people, culture or races, it's just storytelling.

This thread is awesome. I still joke about that article. And I always smirk at Galdalf's 'from the south'.
