Needed: a way to make a synopsis out the first two LOTR:EEs for the parents

Okay, for the past two years it has been a tradition with my family to go and see the new LOTR film when I am home for the holidays.
While my parents do like the movies, they never read the books and did not bother re-watch FOTR before going to see TTT last year. As a result, they were greatly confused and not as overwhelmed as they were with the first one. To avoid a repeat of this with the crucial ROTK, I have decided to use the EE DVDs to present a brief synopsis of the first two movies before we go to the last one. While I have an idea of which scenes/chapters to present, I need some input.
I know I will definitely show the opening and closing parts of Fellowship, and the scene of Boromir,Faramir, and Denethor from TTT. But other than that, any recommendations in how to condense two three hour plus movies into less than and hour and a half?

Not enough time, and they have already seen the films once, they just need a refresher.

this would be tough, but i'd boil it down to the core of the story:

FOTR: opening monologue, frodo gets the ring and begins quest, gandolph vs. saruman, meeting aragorn, weathertop, council meeting and departure of fellowship, moria fight and gandolph death, galadriel gift scene (odd choice, but it covers a lot in a short time), boramir frodo confrontation to the end...

TTT: meeting gollum, meeting the roharrim, meeting treebeard, return of gandolph, exorcism of theoden, smeagol banishes gollum, meeting faromir, treebeard sees isengard and ent attack, aragorn arrives at helms deep, aragorn/theoden ride out at end of helms deep, frodo/sam/gollum departure...

hope that helps some. i know it's missing some great stuff, but i tried to cut anything that didn't move the story forward. as rich as these films are, there is an awful lot that could be considered filler.

There is a ring of power that must be destroyed, or evil will win. Two hobbits are trying to accomplish that with the "help" of a creature that used to have the ring and still wants it.

There is a country without a king, but the man who should be king is wrestling with coming back and assuming the kingship, although he avoided it for years. He's being helped by two more hobbits, an elf, and a dwarf.

There is an elf woman who loves this king, enough to give up her immortality. There is a human woman who loves this king, but also loves her country and wants to fight for it.

There is a king and a steward - the king of Rohan is brave and noble and wants to help, the steward of Gondor is insane due to the death of his older son, and the belief that the younger son is not as good.

There is a wizard overseeing it all - and who interferes when necessary.

Let the movie begin!

(It's all about the characters in the long run)
